Early Game Centipede Scourge Build

The Spiritborn class has a number of fun playstyles for players to explore in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, and if you’re a fan of spreading poison and doing big bonk damage to every enemy on the screen, then the Centipede build path is for you.

While the Centipede route is a little slow compared to Jaguar and Eagle builds, it’s one of the easiest Spiritborn setups to use, and it can wipe the entire screen clear of enemies in seconds with DoT, burst damage, and automatic execution effects. It’s a strong playstyle to use for climbing Diablo 4’s Difficulty tiers, and you can easily switch some parts of it around for easier transitioning into the endgame.

Diablo 4 Spiritborn Centipede Build – Active Skills

Spiritborn Devourer skill in D4

Centipede skills feature a mix of damage-over-time and healing effects with sprinkles of burst damage and Vulnerable application. This build turns your Spiritborn into a walking biohazard zone with almost zero downtime on The Devourer and Scourge.

Skill

Upgrades

Withering Fist

  • Enhanced – Gain 1 Vigor per second for every enemy Poisoned by Withering Fist, up to 10.
  • Sharp – Every third attack spreads Poisoning to nearby unaffected enemies. Also spreads Vulnerable when hitting a Vulnerable target.

Stinger

  • Enhanced – Hits Poison enemies for 50% of Stinger’s base damage.
  • Advantageous – Stinger hits make Healthy targets Vulnerable. Hitting Vulnerable targets heals you for 10% of your max health.

Armored Hide

  • Enhanced – Activate Armored Hide to gain max Resolve and increased Thorns for the duration.
  • Adaptable – Evade through enemies while Armored Hide is active to deal Thorns damage and heal for 5% of max health.

Scourge

  • Enhanced – Gain increased Damage vs Crowd Controlled per enemy affected by Scourge
  • Reinforced – Gain 60% of your max Vigor over 6 seconds after casting Scourge

Touch of Death

  • Enhanced – Heal for 2% of Maximum Life every second when a target is infected, up to 18% max health. Heal for the full value when a swarm hatches.
  • Invasive – Swarms burst every second, Poisoning enemies.

The Devourer

  • Harmonius – Launches 10 Toxic Globs upon emerging, Poisoning enemies.
  • Exalted – Non-boss enemies instantly die and unleash Pestilent Swarms when all their remaining life is Poisoned.

This build revolves around Scourge and the Devourer. The former spreads Poison, while the latter executes enemies who have nothing but Poison left in their health bars. Withering Fist and Stinger are here as your bread-and-butter damage tools for when Scourge and the Devourer are active, while Touch of Death acts as a fire-and-forget Poison nuke. Use Armored Hide to break out of CC and give yourself extra defenses.

As far as leveling order is concerned, unlock the skills first, then upgrade them as follows:

  • (2/5) Withering Fist
  • (5/5) Stinger
  • (5/5) Scourge
  • (1/5) Armored Hide
  • (3/5) Touch of Death
  • (5/5) Devourer

This should let you unlock your Key Passive at level 25, assuming you’ve collected all Altars of Lilith in Diablo 4 for the bonus Skill Points. Otherwise, you’ll be able to reach this point by level 35.

Diablo 4 Spiritborn Centipede Build – Passives And Spirit Hall

Centipede build on Penitent difficulty in D4

Unless you’re struggling to deal damage, stay alive, or maintain Vigor, we recommend investing in Passive Skills after leveling up your Active Skills and unlocking your Key Passive. Many passive bonuses aren’t as impactful early on, and they only start to truly shine once you start getting some semblance of a build together. In any case, these passives should help improve your damage, survivability, and Vigor generation.

Passive Skill (Total Points)

Description

Vigorous (3/3)

Casting a Core Skill increases Vigor generation.

Velocity (1/1)

Generate Vigor per second after hitting an enemy and moving.

Follow Through (3/3)

Basic Skills deal increased damage, and more so on their third hits.

Focal Point (1/3)

Gain bonuses based on your equipped weapon. Bonuses are doubled after casting a Focus Skill.

Apex (3/3)

Deal increased damage to Vulnerable enemies. Bonus is doubled against Elites.

Patient Guard (1/3)

Gain Block Chance passively. Gain Block Damage Reduction after standing still for 0.5s.

Bastion (3/3)

Gain Thorns. Gain more Thorns when a Barrier is active.

Antivenom (1/3)

Gain Poison Resistance and increased Poison Resistance cap.

Nourishment (3/3)

Increase Healing received. When you Heal, your Poison damage is increased.

Ravenous (3/3)

Centipede Skills deal more damage. Bonus is doubled against Healthy targets.

Oppressive (3/3)

Centipede Skills deal more damage to Crowd Controlled enemies and gain bonus Crowd Control duration.

Resolution (1/3)

Casting an Ultimate increases your damage against Elites. Double this bonus if fighting only one enemy.

Spiritual Attunement (1/3)

Increase your max Vigor when an Ultimate is equipped.

Supremacy (3/3)

After killing an enemy while an Ultimate is active, gain a Supremacy stack that increases your damage. When your Ultimate expires, gain 5 stacks, but lose one every second.

Prodigy’s Tempo (Key Passive)

Every third consecutive cast of the same Basic Skill increases the rank of all purchased Skills by 2 for 5 seconds. Every third consecutive cast of the same Core or Potency skill decreases the active cooldown of all Skills by 10%, plus 2% for the Skills’ ranks.

Prodigy’s Tempo is the heart of this build
. Keep triggering the second part of this passive to massively reduce the active cooldowns of all your Skills,
including The Devourer
, which starts cooling down even while the Centipede is still on the field.

Spirit Hall

Players can unlock the Spirit Hall by completing the Sacred Hunt quest. This is basically the class’ special mechanic, and it lets players choose two powerful passives based on the four available Spirit Guardians. For this build, we’ll be using the following:

  • Primary Spirit – Gorilla: Casting Gorilla skills deal 100% of your Thorns to enemies hit, and you gain a Barrier for 5% of your max health (up to 30%) for 3 seconds. All Skills count as Gorilla Skills.
  • Secondary Spirit – Centipede: Heal for 1% of your max health for every Nearby enemy you’ve Poisoned in the past 3 seconds, up to 5%.

Diablo 4 Spiritborn Centipede Build – Gear, Legendary Aspects, Paragon, And Runes

The Wound Drinker Unique item description in D4

Gear won’t be that important in the beginning, but as you start getting Legendary Aspects in Diablo 4, probably by around level 30 or so, you’ll want to pick the best ones that synergize with this build. The most important Aspects for this setup are:

  • Menacing (Utility): Scourge continuously affects enemies around you for (5-9) seconds.
  • Inevitable Fate (Offensive): When an enemy’s health falls below 35% while they’re affected by your damage-over-time effects, they will be damaged by an explosion once every 7 seconds.
  • Tormentor’s: Enemies that move while Poisoned will receive (50-250%) of your Thorns damage every second.
  • Umbral: Gain (1-8) of your Primary Resource when you Crowd Control an enemy.

As for item stats, look for the following:

  • Damage
  • Damage Over Time
  • Resource Cost Reduction
  • Cooldown Reduction
  • Movement Speed
  • Essential defenses (Armor, Life, Resistances)

Unique Item Options

While there are plenty of ways to farm for Uniques in Diablo 4, players are still at the mercy of RNG. If you’re lucky enough and snag any of these following Uniques, feel free to incorporate them into the build:

  • Mother’s Embrace (Ring): If your Core Skill hits 4 or more enemis, the Primary Resource cost is refunded.
  • Wound Drinker (Ring): Every time you deal Thorns damage, generate (1-7) Vigor. Gain Toxic Skin’s Passive while wearing this ring.
  • Ring of the Midday Hunt (Ring): Increase your max Vigor by 50%, and every kill generates (1-7) Vigor. While you have Ferocity, all Poisoning damage is dealt across 33% of the normal duration.

Wound Drinker is a high-priority Unique item that basically gives you unlimited Vigor while mobbing when combined with Tormentor’s Aspect and Scourge.

Rune Choices

Runes have made their way back to Diablo 4, and with so many potential combos out there, picking ones that are good for this Spiritborn Centipede build can be tricky. Here are some Runewords that you can try out with this build:

  • NocTal: Gain 10 Offering when inflicting Crowd Control that isn’t Chill or Slow. Spend 100 Offering to spawn a Pestilent Swarm.
  • BacQue: Gain 50 Offering after traveling 5 meters. Spend 300 Offering to evoke Druid’s Earthen Bulwark.

Paragon

Paragon farming heralds the beginning of the endgame, and the build may not to get adjusted as you get more Paragon Boards and Glyphs online. To start, we recommend getting as much damage as possible from the first board so you can start pushing for Torment difficulty. Adjust for more survivability as necessary if you’re dying too frequently.

For Glyphs, choose from the following:

  • Fester: Increase the damage of Centipede Skills.
  • Exploit: Hitting enemies makes them Vulnerable for 3 seconds (20 second cooldown per enemy). Deal increased damage to Vulnerable targets.
  • Turf: Gain increased Damage Reduction versus Close targets
