According to a press release, EA Sports College Football 25 will add the Lou Groza Award for the nation’s top collegiate football place-kicker. The Heisman Trophy for the most outstanding player in college football was confirmed to be in the game back in March, but it was also stated that none of the other major awards would be, so this is a nice surprise.
The reason other awards were not confirmed was due to the National College Football Awards Association declining an offer from EA Sports, claiming it was not adequate for the awards rights fee. That meant official names for other major awards, like the Bednarik, Biletnikoff, Davey O’Brien, Doak Walker, Groza, Jim Thorpe, Maxwell, Outland and Ray Guy awards, would have generic names instead. For example, the Doak Walker Award could potentially be renamed the Running Back of the Year Award or the Receiver of the Year Award, replacing the Fred Biletnikoff Award and so on.
The addition of the Lou Groza award gives hope that terms can be worked out to add the other major awards, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
“EA Sports College Football 25 is one of the most anticipated and long-awaited video game titles in history and we are incredibly excited that the Lou Groza Award will be a part of the game,” said George Linley, Executive Director of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. “The Lou Groza Award is the pinnacle of collegiate football kicking, and we could not be more excited that college football fans from around the world will have a chance to vie for a Groza Award of their own.”
The Standard Edition of EA Sports College Football 25 will release on July 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Fans can get behind the sticks 3 days early on July 16 by pre-ordering the Deluxe Edition or MVP Bundle. The EA Play trial will also be available on July 16.
