The Republican Party can claim a major success in the 2024 US election. Not only did its presidential candidate, Donald Trump, win the White House, the Elephant Party also defeated its opponents in congressional elections.
On Wednesday, multiple U.S. media outlets unanimously reported that Trump’s party also gained a majority in the House of Representatives. The day after the US election, it became clear that Republicans would hold a majority in the Senate.
What does this momentous victory mean for Trump’s entire presidency? You can get an overview here:
Executive, legislative and judicial branches: all in Republican hands
By winning the US presidential election, Trump conquered America managers For himself and his party. In the United States, that body consists of the president, vice president and cabinet, and Trump is already busy filling cabinet vacancies. So the Republican Party has mastered this violence.
let's get started legislation: The United States Congress, like the Swiss Parliament, consists of two chambers. On the one hand, the Senate (similar to the Council of State) consists of two representatives from each federal state. On the other hand, each federal state has a certain number of representatives in the House of Representatives (similar to the National Assembly) based on the size of its population. Starting in January, Republicans will once again hold majorities in the House and Senate.

besides judicial? This is where things get a little complicated. In the United States, the bench is made up of the nine most senior judges, nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate. The term of the so-called Supreme Court is life-long. As the overturning of U.S. abortion laws illustrates, the appointments of these nine justices have had a significant impact on American life.
Six of the current Supreme Court justices were appointed by Republican presidents: Clarence Thomas was appointed by George W. Bush, John Roberts and Samuel Alito were appointed by George W. Bush, and Neil Trump was appointed by Donald Trump. Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. They face three judges appointed by Democrats: Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Joe Biden, appointed by Barack Obama, and Ketanji Brown Jackson, who was recently appointed. The majority here can also be traced back to the Republican Party.

The Republicans thus control all three branches of the U.S. government. But how common is this? Indeed, Donald Trump was able to rely on support from both the legislative and judicial branches during his first term.
Over the next two years, that means Trump's plans on immigration, the economy and society are unlikely to encounter much concrete political resistance. There are few obstacles to Trump’s plan — which includes loosening environmental laws, deporting immigrants, pardoning the Capitol attackers, overhauling Ukraine policy and abolishing the Department of Education.
One possibility remains, however: For the Trump administration to implement all of its plans, Republicans in Congress must always vote as a unit. However, this is not necessarily a given, given that positions sometimes vary widely. About a year ago, it became clear just how vehement an argument Republicans can be at times. It was about naming a new so-called Speaker of the House, the Republican majority leader. It took several rounds of negotiations before settling on Mike Johnson, as party members were divided and the dispute was settled fairly publicly.
