Donald Trump said 'not to play golf before the election' due to security concerns | US news

Donald Trump has not played golf since the alleged attempt on his life and reportedly will not do so again until the US presidential election in November.

The former president, 78, is an avid golfer, but was told that federal agents were not satisfied he was adequately protected if he were to play, Sky News affiliate NBC News reports.

Concerns were expressed during two conversations with Mr. Trump of incident near one of his golf courses September 15.

One interview was with Ronald Rowe, the acting director of the Secret Service, and the other was with officials from the office of the director of national intelligence.

Not being able to play golf represents a significant change to Trump's schedule and lifestyle.

He owns 18 golf courses around the world, and sports have been a fixture in his life long before he entered American politics.

NBC says that if Trump remains without golf until after the election, it will be his longest period without playing since the Covid-19 pandemic.

But last month, his love of greenery put him in potential danger.

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign reportedly demanded the use of military aircraft and vehicles to protect the Republican candidate in the final weeks of the White House race against Democrat Kamala Harris, ahead of the November 5 election.

The application follows an incident on the golf course and failed attack on a rally in Pennsylvania where on July 13, a bullet grazed the ear.

Last month, the Trump campaign said U.S. intelligence officials briefed him on alleged threats from Iran to assassinate him.

According to the Washington Post, they also asked for expanded restrictions on flights over his homes and campaign rallies, as well as for earlier deployment of ballistic glass at events on battlefield sites.

Presidential candidates are protected by the US Secret Service.

The official said that “the former president receives the highest level of protection,” but confirmed that the Trump campaign required a higher level of protection.

Speaking to reporters, US President Joe Biden said he had authorized the security services to protect Trump as if he were a sitting president, and if Trump's request fell into that category, it should be granted.
