The film, currently showing in theaters, follows the former president (played by Sebastian Stan) as it charts his early years and the tutelage Trump received from ruthless lawyer Roy Cohn (played by Succession Jeremy Strong) at the beginning of his career.

After its Cannes debut, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung called the film “pure fiction.”

After a lackluster box office debut (the film opened in 10th place and grossed a paltry $1.6 million in ticket sales), Trump addressed the biopic in a lengthy tirade posted on his Truth Social platform.

“The FALSE and CLASSLESS movie written about me titled 'The Apprentice' (do they even have the right to use that name without permission?) will hopefully be a 'bomb',” Trump wrote. “This is a cheap, defamatory and politically nasty job done just before the 2024 presidential election to hurt the greatest political movement in our country's history: MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump began criticizing the portrayal of his first wife, the late Ivana Trump, who is played in the film by Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova.

“My ex-wife Ivana was a nice and wonderful person, I had a great relationship with her until she died. The author of this pile of garbage, Gabe Sherman, a lowlife and talentless hacker who has long been widely discredited, knew this but chose to ignore it,” Trump added. “It is sad that HUMAN SCUM, like the people involved in this hopefully failed endeavor, can say and do whatever they like to harm a political movement that is much bigger than any of us. MAGA2024!”

When the film's director, Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi, heard about Trump's reaction, he shared his answer to Xwriting: “Thank you for reaching out to us, Donald Trump. If you want, I can talk further. It's a busy day today with a lot of press for The Apprentice, but I might be able to call you tomorrow.
