A director at BBC daytime soap Doctors has confirmed when the final episode will be broadcast.

It was announced last year that the popular daytime soap opera would be taken off the air following cost-cutting measures across the corporation.

In a statement, the BBC said: “We have made the difficult decision to end daytime drama Doctors after 23 years.”

'With superinflation in theater production, the cost of the program has increased significantly, and now more investment is also needed to renovate the place where the show is performed or to transfer it to another venue.'

They continued: “With a fixed license fee, the BBC's funding challenges mean we have to make difficult choices to deliver greater value to audiences.

“We remain fully committed to the West Midlands and all funding for doctors will be reinvested into new programs in the region.

“We would like to thank all the Doctors cast and crew who have been involved in the series since 2000.”

The final episodes, which were originally supposed to air in December, were filmed in March. At the time, director Niall Fraser asked fans not to gather outside its production base in Selly Oak, Birmingham, whilst the show finished.

Niall provided yet another update on X this afternoon, this time confirming that the final episode has been brought forward – to next month.

'Update for Doctor fans. The final episode will now be broadcast on November 14th', he wrote.

'There was a scheduled break with the final episode being December 5th. The break has been canceled and it is now NOVEMBER 14th. Apologies for the confusion.

Earlier this month, former Casualty star and Doctors guest star Cathy Shipton condemned the public broadcaster's decision to take it off air.

“It's a real shame and a shock, and I think, unfortunately, a reckless decision,” she told TV Times.

'Holby City is gone, the doctors are gone… Young directors, writers, actors; They all started working on this type of program. You know, especially with the crew, that people buy houses and move their families there.
