'Brave, humble, melancholic'

I thought it was a bold, subversive, melancholic and thought-provoking film. Phillips' decision to avoid a repeat of the first film is admirable and Joaquin Phoenix adds even more layers to the character of Arthur Fleck. Lady Gaga is fascinating as Harley Quinn, and together the two protagonists offer a moving portrait of loneliness, longing and human fragility. Once again, Hildur Gunadottir's masterful score adds gravitas and underlines the game's desperation. It is certainly not a perfect film, but its ambition is to be applauded and I am pleasantly surprised by the coverage it has received. I hope it is seen from a more positive perspective. David Markham, 37, Sheffield

'bad'

Awful. Two hours and 18 minutes of my life (and my husband's) that I will never get back (related to the grunt that happens when leaving the cinema post). Where to start? While the first film ended with a justification for the Joker's upcoming life of crime, the second film fell short and was a far cry from the comic book movies. The character of the Joker was not developed in any way, on the contrary, he became boring and stupid. Harley Quinn was, at best, two-dimensional, and at worst, a scheming boy band fan. Lady Gaga's voice is stunning, so unfortunately, Joaquin Phoenix's voice pales in comparison. I don't remember any of the original songs, so it was bad karaoke. Harvey Dent never left school. Violence by prison guards makes no sense. As a serious moviegoer, this is the most disappointing and lazy movie I have ever seen. Lou Brown, 48, Burton in trend

“There is no perfect plot”

I loved the first movie that adapted superhero movies. Folie à Deux lacks a decent plot. The programs are great but useless. Lady Gaga acts but they don't believe her. Let's shoehorn his character into fantasy scenes. If those useless scenes had been removed, the film would have been more coherent. It's not a car accident, but it's not a patch on the Joker either, wasting two great actors. Eugenio Martín, 66 years old, Derry

'It felt like an epilogue'

It felt more like an epilogue to the first film than a sequel, and lacked any obvious build-up to a big moment, but I enjoyed it for its boldness. It's a bold move to do something different than expected, and I think that's the point. The plot somewhat reflected reality. If you defy what is expected of you, people will turn against you. Yes, Joker 2 would have liked to see Arthur's rise to power and Joker 3 his death at the hands of Batman, but this is a solid movie, it just doesn't feel like a musical. Gary, 42, Ipswich

'The Waste of Brandon Gleeson'

I can see what Todd Phillips was trying to do with the story. Unfortunately, turning it into a musical instrument and successfully achieving that curve requires a very subtle and creative touch that simply doesn't exist. On top of that, there was the absolute waste of Brendan Gleeson. Bill, Limerick, Ireland

'How is it possible for a movie so long to be so short?'

When I told my friends I was going to see Joker 2, their response was, “Shouldn't that be a little complicated?” That is. (They know I'm a sensitive soul.) After leaving the theater, I sent them a message saying the only thing that bothered me was how poorly written the movie was. Feeling like something was missing, I left the theater thinking I didn't understand the movie: how could something so short happen in such a long movie? Lydia Richardson, 22 years old, Paris, France

'A deeply strange labor of love'

I thought it was a deeply strange labor of love and worth watching. I liked the musical elements. Gaga was good and Phoenix's voice worked well, but it seemed long. A two-sided origin story suggested a third chance against Phillips. Now it was such a failure that it seems impossible. A good-bad movie, but hey, at least it's not set in the multiverse. That week I watched three 140-minute movies. It was much better than Megalopolis, but nowhere near as original or fun as The Substance. David Belpin, 66, Nottingham

'I could have directed it better'

It's a missed opportunity to really immerse yourself in a complicated love story. It had so much potential with such a good cast and all the subplots, mental issues and more, but it was all removed and replaced with songs and scenes that added no value. They shouldn't have messed with the previous Joker design. I could have directed better! Ely (Oxfordshire)

'Gaga is spectacular, Phoenix is incredible'

As a standalone film, I think it would have been an interesting concept. Gaga is spectacular, Phoenix is incredible. After the first film I went in with high expectations and was disappointed, this film has been done completely differently. The actors do not receive the material they deserve. I wanted to love him and I wanted him to be more than he was. Unfortunately, it's not all style and substance. Kirsty, Tyne and Wear
