Today CD Projekt RED announced that Cyberpunk 2077‘s popular expansion Phantom Liberty has sold over 5 million copies by the end of 2023.
The announcement made on the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, updates the sales number of the expansion from the 4.3 million copies shared at the end of November.
This means that the expansion has moved roughly another 700,000 copies in December alone, which is certainly flattering.
Considering that the original launch of Cyberpunk 2077 was certainly far from perfect, the extensive efforts made by CD Projekt RED to steer the ship in the right direction followed by the success of Phantom Liberty are a rather uplifting redemption story that reminds me of Final Fantasy XIV.
Personally, this is exactly the kind of story that I love to write, so my day is now made.
The main game now is steadily in “very positive” review territory on Steam and the same goes for the expansion itself. While mistakes were certainly made in 2020, we can say that the folks at CD Projekt RED have more than made up for them.
If you’re curious as to why Cberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is so successful, you can read our review, which awarded it with a 9.0 out of 10.
Recently CD Projekt RED complemented the new additions and changes made with version 2.0 (which launched at the same time as the expansion) with a new update 2.1, which contributed to further improving the game across the board.
Phantom Liberty is currently available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. While the original game is also available for PS4 and Xbox One, last-gen platforms won’t receive the expansion.
In the meanwhile, we already know that Project Orion, the next Cyberpunk game, is already in the concept phase. CD Projekt RED is building its development team in Boston and they expect it to include about 40-50 developers in 2024.
