Guildford-base video game developer, Criterion Games, has officially become part of EA Entertainment’s Battlefield studios. Having a rich history in video game development, Criterion has gained renown for its contributions to the racing game genre through franchises like Burnout and Need for Speed. They have also worked alongside DICE on the development of Battlefield V and Battlefield 2042.

In a statement regarding Criterion’s new role in the Battlefield franchise, via the official EA website, Vince Zampella, the Group General Manager for Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi, Battlefield, and Need for Speed, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “Criterion is added to our world-class Battlefield studios dedicated to ushering in a new era for the franchise. The majority of the team will be working alongside DICE, Ripple Effect, and Ridgeline that are led by Byron Beede, GM of Battlefield. ” Zampella also clarified that despite Criterion’s involvement with Battlefield, they will continue their work on the future of the Need for Speed series.

The latest installment in the first-person shooter video game series, Battlefield 2042, has encountered significant challenges since its release in 2021. The main issues cited by players and critics include widespread bugs, the lack of features previously seen in earlier Battlefield games, and several changes to gameplay. In September 2022, Vince Zampella himself acknowledged the shortcomings of Battlefield 2042, stating that the game had “strayed a little too far from what Battlefield is.”

With Criterion taking on an important role in shaping the future of the Battlefield franchise, there is considerable anticipation surrounding how they will contribute to potentially restoring the series to its former glory. For now, fans can only wait for an official announcement regarding a new entry in the Battlefield series.
