It was recently revealed that the new Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture movie had to actually change its title due to the currently ongoing Ukraine war.
Japanese website Comic Natalie explained that the team behind the upcoming movie planned to call it “Z of the Recapture”, but due to a certain ongoing real life event, the name had to be altered.
The event in question was the currently ongoing Ukraine war, and the controversy involved the “Z” in the title. Apparently, the letter has a connection to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as it has been commonly associated with the Russian forces. It is said that their military vehicles are occasionally adorned with “Z symbols”.
Allegedly, the symbol “Z” has been “heavily propagandized” by Russia and those in support of the country to the point that some European governments have banned it. This combined with Code Geass’ heavy focus on war, racism, and politics, drove the team to change the name.
Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture will make its way to theaters on May 2024.
