Britain has big plans: What the island nation wants most is to stop an entire generation from smoking.

The UK Parliament is currently debating the extremely ambitious Tobacco and Vaping Bill. Among other things, the draft law wants to raise the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products by one year each year. What this means: If this law is passed, anyone born after January 1, 2009 will never be able to buy cigarettes or e-cigarettes again in their lifetime.

The “world-leading” reform aims to protect children and young people, particularly from the health risks of nicotine and e-cigarette addiction, and reduce the burden on the National Health System (NHS).

The rising number of children vaping is alarming. The new law aims to stop the targeted marketing of e-cigarettes to minors – a practice that is completely unacceptable.

The law also includes measures to reduce the so-called appeal of e-cigarettes: flavors such as chewing gum, gummy bears or cotton candy will be banned, as will advertising and sponsorship of e-cigarettes. They will also no longer appear in vending machines.

The government will also provide £70 million for projects to help female smokers quit. One has already been announced: the NHS is offering all smokers a once-daily pill said to be more effective than nicotine replacement gum or patches. In addition, all hospitals will incorporate so-called smoking cessation opt-out interventions into routine care. The bill will also allocate £10 million for trade regulation against illegal trade.

The bill passed two-thirds of the House of Commons. 415 MPs voted in favor and 47 against. In order to pass, it must also pass a third reading in the House of Lords and ultimately receive royal assent – even if it is only a formal assent.
