Donald Trump's presidential campaign hinged on Bill Clinton's comments that he blamed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the death of a nursing student in Georgia.

On Sunday, Clinton was campaigning in the state when he referenced the murder of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old student at the University of Georgia in Athens.

– You had a case in Georgia not too long ago, right? They did an ad about it, about a young woman killed by an immigrant,” Clinton said Sunday in Fort Valley.

“Well, if everyone had been properly vetted, it probably wouldn't have happened.” But if everyone is properly vetted, that won't happen and there won't be enough children in America to sustain the population, so we need vetted immigrants to work.”

Riley died in February while jogging. Her body was found near the lake, and the cause of death was blunt force trauma and suffocation.

Jose Antonio Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan national who authorities say came to the United States illegally, was charged with her murder. He faces 10 charges, including criminal murder, malicious murder, false imprisonment, assault with intent to rape and kidnapping.

Ibarra pleaded not guilty. The trial will begin next month.

The Trump campaign, which has linked illegal immigration to crime, said Clinton's comments exposed how Biden and Harris failed to secure the border.

“Kamala Harris claimed the border is 'secure' just days after illegal immigrant (accused) Laken Riley killer Jose Ibarra entered the country,” the campaign said in a statement to CNN. “Ibarra was caught at the border and then released into the country by Kamala Harris. President Trump will secure the border and end catch and release.”

However, Harris' spokesman – he said on social media that Trump is guilty of failing to implement a bipartisan border security bill that would strengthen the vetting process.
