Bill Clinton is campaigning for Kamala Harris in Georgia, North Carolina

Kamala Harris' presidential campaign sent Bill Clinton to key states 22 days from Election Day.

The former president campaigned on Harris' behalf on Sunday in Albany, Georgia, speaking to worshipers at Mount Zion Baptist Church. On Thursday, the Harris campaign announced that Clinton would headline a bus tour of eastern North Carolina.

Both Harris and former President Trump visited the Tar Heel State after Hurricane Helene.

“Bringing people together and building and mending the breaches, as Isaiah says, those are the things that work,” Clinton said Sunday at Mount Zion Baptist Church. “Blaming, dividing, belittling – they give you a lot of votes at election time, but it doesn't work.”

“This whole election and the future of the country turns out to be what people who were on the fence about voting will do in the next three and a half weeks,” Clinton added, addressing the crowd. “It's the craziest thing I can do.” ever seen.”

According to the Associated Press, although the Black Church was not completely full, the huge crowd greeted Clinton with a standing ovation. Many of the participants were older, but some younger ones were scattered around the benches.

Albany was an early battleground in the civil rights struggle. The city attracted national attention when hundreds of protesters, including Martin Luther King Jr., were arrested and imprisoned in 1961 and 1962.

The 42nd president's visit to both battleground states marks a new attempt by the Harris-Walz campaign to appeal to rural voters who have traditionally voted Republican in recent presidential elections.

Last week, the Trump campaign launched a three-day bus tour of North Carolina with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds of the United States Rep. Elise StefanikRN.Y. and several former Trump administration officials campaigning for the Republican presidential candidate.

Democrats see Clinton as someone who can mobilize both rural and black voters. But while Clinton has been credited with being popular in Black communities in the South, it remains to be seen whether he can continue to inspire Black voters as the population becomes more familiar with his presidency, according to the AP.

Georgia is one of seven states seen as crucial in this year's presidential election, and turnout among black voters could prove key for Democrats to win the state's 16 electoral votes.

According to the AP, President Biden won Georgia in 2020 by 11,779 votes out of more than 5 million cast. It was the first time a Democrat took office since Clinton in 1992. Four years later, Clinton lost the state to Republican Bob Dole but won re-election.

In 1992, Clinton and then-Sen. Al Gore rode his campaign bus through southwestern Georgia to court rural voters. Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz returned to that approach earlier in the campaign, visiting Savannah and Liberty County in the southeastern part of the state, but did not go west.
