The assassination attempt against former president and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump nicked his ear. Two others were less lucky, including Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief killed by an errant bullet.
Not that Trump gives a damn.
“Helen said President Joe Biden tried to call to console the family after the shooting, but she wanted none of it,” the New York Post reported, referring to Comperatore’s widow. “I didn’t talk to Biden. I didn’t want to talk to him. My husband was a devout Republican and he would not have wanted me to talk to him.”
This sort of thing was clearly catnip for the right-wing tabloid, even though Comperatore added, “I don’t have any ill-will towards Joe Biden. I’m not one of those people that gets involved in politics. I support Trump, that’s who I’m voting for but I don’t have ill-will towards Biden.”
The Post editorialized that her position reflects a “steadfast” sign that Biden “isn’t welcome.” Really, she says she holds no ill will. She just thinks it would be disrespectful toward her late husband to talk to Biden. But the Post will do what the Post does.
Still, It’s irrelevant whether Comperatore took the call or not. The real story is that Biden is a class act who was worried about her and her family, and wanted to offer his condolences. Say what you will about Biden, his own history of tragedy makes him incredibly sensitive to personal loss.
But even that isn’t the real headline. This is:
“She said the family has not heard from Trump.”
Anyone surprised?
