Hardware manufacturer ASUS has announced a new piece of gaming-focused gear called the ROG Mjolnir. Slated to join the ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) line, the Mjolnir appears targeted towards players on the go.
Though best known for desktop PC hardware like monitors and graphics cards, ASUS has made strides in recent years to cater to the needs of game enthusiasts whose tech and gadget needs demand greater portability. The ASUS ROG Ally has emerged as a strong competitor to the Steam Deck for dominance in the handheld PC gaming scene, while other initiatives like the ROG Phone and ROG NUC cater to mobile-based players and PC fans that want to shrink their desktop unit’s footprint, respectively.

ASUS ROG Mjolnir Promises Portable Power With a Thor-inspired Appearance
The latest announcement from ASUS for the Republic of Gamers line could easily be mistaken for an April Fool’s joke if not for the actual timing of the reveal, which was posted on April 2, 2024 via ASUS ROG’s official social media accounts. The new item is called the ASUS ROG Mjolnir, and at first glance it looks like a tech approximation of the mighty hammer of Thor, akin to the one seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Thor films. The announcement also mentions that more details about the ROG Mjolnir will be revealed at Computex 2024, a large tech-focused trade show starting in Taipei on June 4, 2024.
Though the official post does not explicitly describe the functions and features of the ASUS ROG Mjolnir, some details are fairly easy to discern from the image in the announcement. The device is named after the iconic hammer wielded by Norse deity Thor, but it also could be a reference to the existing ASUS Thor line of desktop PC power supply units. The item itself could be a large portable power station that mounts at least four standard Type B power sockets. The ROG Mjolnir also seems to include two USB-A ports and two USB-C ports, along with a screen that shows data like output voltage and battery charge. The unique feature of the Mjolnir is the large tube-like “handle” extending from the top of the casing. Reports suggest it could be a light source or a detachable flashlight.
The announcement of the ASUS ROG Mjolnir shows that ASUS is more fully leaning into targeting the needs of the mobile and portable gaming market. Where PC and console gaming was once seen as a sedentary pastime locked in bedrooms or basements, items like the ROG Ally and gaming laptops like the ROG Strix are putting high-end hardware in players’ hands wherever they set up. The ROG Mjolnir could be a suitable companion accessory to keep those power-hungry devices topped off when away from the grid.
