What are they accused of?
The International Criminal Court has accused Netanyahu and Galante of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Gaza Strip since October 8, 2023. forward. What exactly does this mean?
Israel does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. However, according to the court, this does not work here. The Palestinian Territory is a state party. The court already ruled in 2021 that it also has jurisdiction over areas occupied by Israel since 1967.
The courts in The Hague do not have the capacity to execute arrest warrants. But its 124 member states – including Switzerland – are obliged to arrest wanted criminals as soon as they enter their territory. This severely limits travel options for the person you're looking for.
How did Israel react?
Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog responded angrily and sharply to the arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Galante. “This is a dark day for the justice system. This is a dark day for humanity,” he wrote on X.
