Also abolish the heating of football stadiums!

Snow football – what could be better?Picture: www.imago-images.de

Last night's NFL game was disrupted by heavy snow – what a blast! Sports like football should also follow this example.

This morning, on my way to work across a snow-covered landscape, I watched the football game between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Suddenly, it started snowing on my screen—very hard. It was difficult to see the players and the ball behind the snowflakes. Soon the lawn was completely white. What a joy!

Because playing in the snow means pure chaos. NFL pros — the best in the game — suddenly passes are slipping out of their hands, players are slipping, and throws are no longer as accurate.

It's a completely different game. But as a viewer, it's still fun.

Comments on social media quickly made it clear I wasn't the only one. Regardless, snow sports have a great reputation in the United States.

Of course, many NFL stadiums have roofs that provide protection from the weather. But teams in particular from colder climes, like the Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, use this location to their advantage. Teams from the South often suffer from cold or snow, especially during playoff games held in January and February.

Yet, in this country, lawn heaters get in the way of the fun. Where there is no snow, accumulation can cause flight delays and cancellations.

In fact, you should race in all weather conditions that are not life-threatening (severe storms or thunderstorms). Does the ball roll poorly in the snow? Is the grass quality poor in the pouring rain and do players slip and fall frequently? so what? ! We don't like indoor football. External influences and the ability to cope with those influences are part of it.

This applies not only to football and American football, but also to sports such as Formula 1. Racing in the rain was once considered the ultimate sport. Today, few people drive when there is water on the roads. This is when it's most exciting, as rain is seen as a great equalizer, where the car's advantage becomes significantly smaller and the quality of the driver is more important. Of course, there are some limits that must not be exceeded. The health of our athletes is our top priority.

However, conditions that do not unduly jeopardize this should not be grounds for refusal. Because spectacles and performances are guaranteed in rain or snow. What happens on the grass and track is even more unpredictable. The great Bayern Munich may also suffer a setback in Saarbrücken. Or Sebastian Vettel driving Toro Rosso to beat Ferrari and McLaren. Then suddenly, the puck wasn't just played on a smooth surface anymore, which made the game unpredictable.

This would be a good idea in today's sports, especially football, where the big guys are getting bigger (i.e. “richer”) and the small guys are getting smaller (i.e. “poorer”) .

Oh, by the way, for those interested: Cleveland won the game against Pittsburgh in dramatic fashion, 24-19.
