In the United States, the presidency is awarded on a winner-takes-all basis. Therefore, the person who gets the most votes in a state also gets all of that state's electoral votes. The more populous a state is, the more electoral votes it receives. The only exceptions are Maine and Nebraska, where the vote is split. 270 electoral votes are needed to win.

Many states have clearly been in Democratic or Republican hands for decades. For example, Republicans have won Utah in every presidential election since 1972. On the other hand, the District of Columbia’s electoral votes always go to Democratic candidates.
Instead, some states vote sometimes for Republicans and sometimes for Democrats, so-called swing states. This year they are: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. If nothing else, the 2024 presidential race will likely be decided in these seven states.

For a party to gain a majority in the House of Representatives, it needs 218 seats. All these seats are subject to elections every two years.
