Letter to the editor: Show us the LRT books

Re: Crisis in the capital; Mayor blames city’s financial struggles on feds and province, Aug. 9

Dear Mr. Mayor, transit funding and property tax equivalents (from the federal government) will not do it. This is not an income problem. This is a spending problem. We live beyond our means. You knew this when you ran for office.

You need to court transit passengers with consistent excellent service at reasonable rates. Crappy service, no-shows, reduced runs and high fares turn people off. You know this, too.

Most importantly, you need to show us the LRT “books” from initial requests for proposals (RFPs) to final contract awards. Who got what and for how much? No more secrets! Put it all out there for taxpayers and councillors to examine.

BREAK IT ALL DOWN

It is ridiculous the amount of taxes we pay when we fuel up our vehicles, yet we blame big oil for how expensive it is.

I do not understand why, when we get our receipt from the gas pumps, it it not broken down in detail showing us the number of litres purchased, the cost per litre for fuel and the total fuel cost (before taxes are applied), and then individual line items showing the amount collected for each of the taxes applied to your purchase. It would be a big eye opener/reminder of just how much the governments (both federal and provincial) are taking of our hard-earned money in hidden taxes.

We deserve this kind of transparency so that we can make informed decisions in the voting booth.

A WORLD LEADER IN EUTHANASIA

Re: Euthanasia on the rise; Now Canada’s 5th leading cause of death: Report, Aug. 10

When Justin Trudeau ran in 2015, he promised to put Canada back on the world stage. From playing Mr. Dressup in India to spending $6,000 per night for a hotel suite in London to leading all G7 as the most travelled leader, Trudeau has been an embarrassment on the world stage.

Now Trudeau has made Canada a world leader in the numbers euthanized annually. What started as a way out for those suffering from debilitating, never-ending pain and terminally ill keeps being expanded by Trudeau.

I find having Trudeau playing God extremely troubling.
