GreedFall 2 Bringing Back De Sardet May Work Under One Premise

Key Takeaways

  • GreedFall 2 is a prequel focused on the spread of the Malichor plague & will largely take place on the Old Continent of Gacane.
  • The appearance of GreedFall’s protagonist, De Sardet, in GreedFall 2 poses immersion and consistency issues.
  • GreedFall 2 could have De Sardet appear on one of two conditions: either use GreedFall save files or mention the character only, but both have challenges.

Despite being the second game in the franchise, GreedFall 2: The Dying World is a prequel set three years before the events of the first game. According to what Spiders has revealed so far, GreedFall 2 will focus on the initial spread of the Malichor plague that drove many colonizers to Teer Fradee in search of a cure. Additionally, while the beginning of the game will see GreedFall 2‘s protagonist, a Teer Fradee native, taken away from their home, the remainder of the game will supposedly take place on the Old Continent of Gacane. In light of that, it’s possible players could run into the first game’s protagonist, De Sardet, as they are originally from the Old Continent. However, having them appear in any way would potentially create an insurmountable problem.

As the first GreedFall allowed players to customize the look of their De Sardet, having the character appear in GreedFall 2 could ruin the immersion for those who played the first game. For instance, if a player’s version of De Sardet in GreedFall was a man, seeing the character show up as a woman in the prequel wouldn’t make sense. As such, there remains only one premise for a De Sardet appearance to work in GreedFall 2.

How De Sardet Could Appear in GreedFall 2: The Dying World

Option 1: GreedFall 2 Uses the Player’s Save File From the First Game to Determine De Sardet’s Appearance

The most obvious way GreedFall 2 could have De Sardet appear is if it used players’ GreedFall save file to determine the character’s appearance, much like BioWare’s Mass Effect series has done with Commander Shepard’s customizable appearance through each installment. This would allow players to encounter the version of De Sardet that they created in the first game, thereby maintaining consistency between the two games.

Unfortunately, such a feature would not be easily implemented, and that rings especially true of
GreedFall 2
.

GreedFall was originally released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with an enhanced version launching a couple of years later on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. GreedFall 2, on the other hand, is heading into early access on PC via Steam exclusively, meaning it would only be able to pull from the save files of those who enjoyed the first game on PC. The only other way this would work is if GreedFall enabled a cloud save that could be transferred to other platforms. Needless to say, it would be an issue Spiders might feel isn’t worth the hassle. However, there is another way De Sardet could “appear” that would require little effort from the developer.

Option 2: De Sardet Appears by Mention Only in GreedFall 2

While it wouldn’t result in a physical appearance by De Sardet, GreedFall 2 could instead see the character appearing by mention only. On the Old Continent of Gacane during GreedFall 2‘s time period, the name of De Sardet would have been well-known, likely even a household name. As such, any mention of the beloved protagonist in the next game would be fitting. Unfortunately, since GreedFall 2 is a prequel, just a mention of the character might not be enough to mean anything of significance to players, as it would not mention any of their accomplishments during their time as De Sardet.

What could and arguably should happen is GreedFall 2 delving more into the history of the De Sardet family, since the first game made it clear how many secrets the family has. This would provide some long-requested context of the character for returning players, and it would double as an interesting bit of storytelling for any newcomers. If Spiders is unable to make either of these options work, it might be best to leave De Sardet out of the picture entirely, but fans of the first game are likely expecting the protagonist to return in some way.
