Developing video games is an incredibly difficult undertaking for any developer, even more so when the game is live service and has to be continuously updated with fresh content on a near-weekly basis, sometimes daily, to keep the community engaged and coming back consistently. Despite the response to Helldivers 2 being overwhelmingly positive, there has been some criticism in recent days surrounding the state of the game and the focus on Warbonds over fixing issues.
Recently, the Helldivers 2 sub-Reddit has seen its share of players criticizing Arrowhead Game Studios for various reasons, which has led to u/TheGentlemenCEO creating a post in which they call out the “whiney entitlement” of the community saying,
“A lot of people in here need a reality check. Your opinion on the game and what it needs, where the devs priorities need to be, or how the game should function are not nearly as important as you’ve convinced yourself it is. If the current state of the game is bothering you this deeply go do something else for a bit. For the majority of us, this game is still an incredible experience despite all the flaws it has.”
The Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Johan Pilestedt responded to the Reddit post, sharing his own thoughts on the state of Helldivers 2 saying,
“Let me add some context. Arrowhead is independently owned by people working at the studio and not swayed by shareholders in the traditional sense. Of course, we are in a great partnership with Sony where we agree on targets to hit etc. But there isn’t a forcing function or requirement per se.
We want to deliver the best in the industry and we are calibrating our efforts of fixing vs new stuff. It’s easy to say “Just fix, don’t add”, but the reality of the competitiveness in this industry is that we have to do both to stay relevant.
We are figuring it out, the demands and expectations on the studio are high, all eyes are on us, and we have a sole purpose – to make this the best live game you’ve ever played. We just need to find our stride and balance.
It’s a hot topic at the studio, and I’m sorry for the sloppy mistakes we’ve made as of recent.”
Regardless of whether you think Arrowhead Game Studios should be focusing more on fixing the game or new content, it is hard to deny that the developers are incredibly passionate and have brought players a huge amount of content over the past two months. This month alone saw the eradication of the Automatons, which turned back on the Helldivers when it transpired that the robots had secretly been plotting and building an even stronger army. After spending all of April fighting back their forces, it is time to take a break from the robots and give our attention to the Terminids as the latest Major Order calls for players to kill 2 billion Terminids.
Although players should be able to complete the Major Order without too much trouble, it is always best to be prepared because the Automatons and Terminids play very differently. So, we recommend checking out our Helldivers 2 best weapons guide and best armor guide so you can be equipped for whichever enemy stands in the way of democracy.
