A life-long Nintendo gamer made a nostalgic discovery, as they found a 1997 Super Mario RPG official player’s guide in their closet. With the success of the Super Mario RPG remake potentially spurring more retro RPG game remakes from Nintendo, the find offered both a pleasant surprise and an unexpected bit of usefulness.
First released in 1996, the original Super Mario RPG was the final Mario game to be published for the SNES. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars would be the first of many role-playing games in the Super Mario Bros. franchise and was also the first Mario game to feature turn-based combat and a 3D isometric environment. With the massive gameplay changes, many players found themselves drawn to official guides for help, with those same guides proving useful even today.
Super Mario RPG Gets New Update
The remake of the popular classic Super Mario RPG receives a substantial update, addressing various game progression issues and bugs.
Nintendo fan tectactoe shared a photo of an original Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Nintendo Player’s Guide that they got from a Toys’R’Us back in 1997 and recently found during a closet clean out. The official guide was released to help players make their way through the vastly new RPG gameplay of Legend of the Seven Stars, and many fans have found that the guide is just as useful for the recent remake as it was for the original game. Characters featured on the guide’s cover art include the familiar faces of Mario, Yoshi, Peach, and Bowser, along with the Super Mario RPG exclusive characters of Gino, Mallow, and Boshi. Fellow fans chimed in on the nostalgic discovery, with many noting the unexpected longevity of the book and others lamenting the modern day lack of physical game guides.
Mario Fans Continue To Show Love For RPGs
While some Mario fans may have been unfamiliar with the series’ retro RPGs prior to last year’s remake, many players were elated when they found out Nintendo was bringing back the first ever role-playing Mario game. Fans celebrated the surprise revival, marking it as a hopeful return to form by Nintendo. The critical and commercial success of the Super Mario RPG remake perfectly reflected the Mario fandom’s love of the franchise’s RPGs, with many hoping for the return of even more classics. While it remains to be seen if more Mario RPGs will be on the way, the nostalgia rush from retro finds and surprise remakes continues to fuel enthusiasm for the diversity of games in the Super Mario Bros. lineup.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars remains one of the most beloved and influential RPGs in the Mario series. With the success of the Super Mario RPG remake and upcoming release of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Nintendo fans will want to stay tuned for any updates on Mario RPGs and more releases in the iconic franchise.
