The free-to-play platform brawler MultiVersus is set to return. It was previously released with purchasable editions despite the developer’s open beta claim, but it was soon taken offline and removed from stores. Now we have a new release date for the return of MultiVersus in 2024 along with exciting news confirming a new mode, more characters, and extra drastic changes.
The MultiVersus ‘open beta’ period ended ten months after it launched in May 2023. Many fans were rightfully ticked off as, although free-to-play, there were purchasable editions along with purchasable currency to get skins. It even reached Season 2 and added new characters such as Black Adam.
While the game’s short existence from 2022 to 2023 went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows very quickly, everyone is hoping the game’s return is a triumphant one. The 2024 release date is only a couple of months away, and there are exciting new additions to whet the appetites of returning fans and newcomers.
When is the MultiVersus 2024 release date?
The release date for when MultiVersus will return is May 28th, 2024. This is confirmed by the official multiversus Twitter account which includes a video address from the Game Director and Co-Founder, Tony Huynh.
In this video address, it’s confirmed that the game is returning and that it will be free to play once more. He says the team has learned a lot from the community’s feedback during the ‘open beta,’ and that the development team has been hard at work creating an experience that leaves a mark on the platform fighter genre.
New MultiVersus 2024 mode
One of the exciting changes for MultiVersus in 2024 is a brand new PvE mode. Before the game was just PvP as 1v1 or 2v2, but now it is set to introduce a PvE mode that will offer a new way to play. Unfortunately, the game director doesn’t offer any more insight than PvP offering a new way to play with unique rewards.
Aside from the introduction of a new PvP mode, it’s also confirmed that the game has switched from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. This will improve the visuals and likeness of the characters. The specific example cited by the game director is Shaggy Sandwiches looking better than ever.
What fans of the fighting genre will love to hear most of all is that the game has been completely rebuilt to support a new netcode. This will provide ‘consistent, world-class online play so everything kick, dodge, and batarang will be delivered with pinpoint accuracy’. The promise is that there will be consistent game performance no matter your platform.
New characters
Lastly, the game director also teases new characters and levels. There’s unfortunately no list of new characters or backdrops for the game, but one of the revealed characters is Marvin the Martian from Looney Tunes.
While an ensemble of new characters is really exciting, it’s also confirmed that existing characters will have new movesets of fresh attacks and combat mechanics. This is really exciting for fans who played the game during the ‘open beta’ and already mastered some of the existing combatants such as Wonder Woman and Batman.
MultiVersus will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X/S, and Steam on May 28th.
In other gaming news, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players can download the free Dragon’s Dogma 2 demo right now, and March 2024 is full of massive video game releases.
