The last of four former Xbox exclusives that will be going multiformat has now been confirmed, as Xbox itself has declared Sea of Thieves is coming to PlayStation 5 this April.
In an Xbox Wire post, Xbox made the reveal as it also confirmed today’s earlier announcements of Grounded and Pentiment coming to Nintendo Switch, and Hi-Fi Rush being confirmed for the PlayStation 5.
Sea of Thieves will support crossplay across PlayStation, Xbox and PC – and will be available for wishlisting on the PlayStation Store from tomorrow, February 22. “Having built a passionate community of more than 35 million players from around the world, the support of cross play for Xbox, PlayStation and PC will allow players to experience epic pirate adventures with friends on more platforms.”
Sea of Thieves PlayStation 5 release date
Sea of Thieves will be available on PlayStation 5 from April 30, 2024. As mentioned, it’ll support cross play across all formats, and will also get updates on the same schedule as the Xbox and PC versions currently do.
“The studios that built these celebrated games have drawn on their multi-platform experience to open the worlds they created to even more players and communities,” was Xbox’s statement on the move.
Last week, an Xbox Podcast explained the reasoning for the four games making their way to non-Xbox consoles. Xbox head Phil Spencer claimed the move would “give us the ability to continue to invest in” those franchises by giving them “more players to play with”.
Sea of Thieves, developed by Rare Software, originally launched for the Xbox One in 2018, and has had plenty of years of updates and new features since, including crossovers with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean and The Secret of Monkey Island.
