It’s been a wild start to the year for the video games industry. Not only has there been major news behind the scenes, but there have also been fantastic video game releases with Xbox and Helldivers 2 both perfect examples. Lots of people are wondering if there is any chance Helldivers 2 will come to Xbox, and Phil Spencer has commented on the game’s PS5 console exclusivity.
Microsoft has had a very busy week. They’ve confirmed that four Xbox games are going multiplatform meaning they will find their way onto the PS5. In addition, Microsoft reportedly used Palworld to show the future of Xbox games to employees. The relationship between Xbox and Palworld has blossomed into a partnership with some predicting it’s ‘there’s no doubt’ Microsoft will try to buy Pocketpair.
While Microsoft has been informing supporters about the future of Xbox, Helldivers 2 has just been an amazing game providing PS5 and PC players with a fun multiplayer PvE epic. It’s only natural that Xbox players are watching the fun with envy, and, unfortunately, it’s unlikely Sony will reciprocate Microsoft’s advances by bringing the PlayStation multiplayer console exclusive to Series X/S.
Will Helldivers 2 come to Xbox?
No, Helldivers 2 is not coming to Xbox consoles. Although it was a first for Sony to publish a PlayStation console exclusive on PC at launch, the sad news for Microsoft gamers is that Sony is not reaching out to Xbox.
On the other hand, Microsoft is doing the opposite. As confirmed yesterday during their announcement podcast, they are bringing four exclusives to PS5. They didn’t name the exclusives, but leaks point to Sea of Thieves and HiFi Rush as the two most notable games.
While Microsoft is bringing Xbox exclusives to PS5 and Nintendo Switch, it’s important to point out that they are not bringing newer releases such as Starfield and the upcoming Indiana Jones. Microsoft is not fully abandoning Xbox console exclusivity, and they have promised employees that there will be ‘future hardware’ meaning another console.
Although Helldivers 2 is available to play on PC, the game is exclusive to PS5 for consoles. The face of Xbox, Phil Spencer, commented on this PS5 exclusivity in an interview with Gamefile (via Windows Central). Below is what Phil Spencer said:
“I will say, when I look at a game like Helldivers 2, and it’s a great game, kudos to the team shipping on PC and PlayStation, I’m not exactly sure who it helps in the industry by not being on Xbox. If you try to twist yourself to say, like, somehow that benefited somebody somewhere.”
Although he laments the game not being on Series X/S consoles, Phil Spencer admits he understands Sony’s exclusivity approach because “There’s a legacy in console gaming that we’re going to benefit by shipping games and not putting them on other places”. Xbox is still going to have exclusives such as Indiana Jones going forward, so to criticize PlayStation would be hypocritical.
While Helldivers 2 is not coming to Xbox, there’s always the verbiage: never say never. It’s unlikely to happen anytime soon, but no one ever thought Xbox console exclusives would be coming to PS5 and that is happening this year.
For more Helldivers 2 news, the developer has given an update on a roadmap, and there is a new update out now on PS5 and PC.
