According to an October 2023 Elle article, Grégoire Trudeau is taking a step back from politics and focusing on mental health advocacy following her 18-year marriage with Trudeau. Closer Together follows that trajectory, taking an autobiographical approach to the self-help genre. Part of the description of the book on the publisher’s site reads, “Sophie Grégoire Trudeau invites readers on a deeply personal journey toward self-knowledge, acceptance, and empowerment, drawing on the expertise of top psychologists, psychiatrists, scientists, and thought leaders.”

The description also says that the book includes personal stories from Grégoire Trudeau’s life, addressing struggles with eating disorders, her career as speaker and television host, and her time as the “de facto ‘first lady’ and mother of three.”

Why did Grégoire Trudeau want to write this book?
According to her initial press release with Penguin Random House Canada, Grégoire Trudeau said, “I’m honoured to be able to share with readers the knowledge, tools and stories that will help people be better equipped to deal with their own emotions and the obstacles that they face in their daily lives. And in sharing part of my own mental health well-being journey, it’s my sincere hope that it will help encourage others to see how deeply connected we all are as human beings.”

A book excerpt in Elle revealed that she has always been curious about how people inhabit their bodies, and how physical alignment offers hints to physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. She also discussed how, when she was a radio and television host in Quebec, she talked about her struggles with an eating disorder on air, even though it could have set back her career, and how that moment was a turning point in her life. Now, following her separation from Trudeau, she wants this book to help people develop tools to deal with suffering and how to “get out of my own way.”
Who is featured in the book and who has recommended it?
The book has interviews with experts on a variety of topics related to mental health. The book’s promotional site includes recommendations including some from former secretary of state and U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, along with book interviewees Plank and Maté.
