Some Apex Legends fans are frustrated with the game’s newest Final Fantasy-themed event, which charges users a shocking amount of money to unlock all of its rewards. Microtransactions are nothing new in Apex Legends, but this event takes things to a new level.
On January 9, Apex Legends launched its Final Fantasy 7 crossover event to build hype for Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth releasing on February 29. Apex Legends has participated in crossovers before, but this Final Fantasy event is one of the more significant ones in the game’s history. Excitement surrounding the event continued to build until its reward track was unveiled, which implemented some surprisingly predatory practices.

Apex Legends: The 15 Best Legends, Ranked (2024)
2024’s Apex Legends meta favors the following legends more than anything else. Here’s which legends to pick next time, ranked.
The Final Fantasy event’s reward track includes periodic “milestone rewards,” which can be reached by collecting the event’s cosmetics. The event’s rarest cosmetic, the new Death Box skin, is the final milestone reward which is reached after collecting 36 event items. The only guaranteed way for users to reach this final milestone is to spend $290 on event packs. Alternatively, users can also unlock the Death Box skin if they get incredibly lucky after opening an event pack, but the skin has less than 1% chance of appearing. Users were also surprised at the event packs’ somewhat manipulative pricing. Users can buy event packs either individually or in bundles of four, both of which are heavily discounted when a player is first beginning the event. However, as a user progresses further into the event and unlocks more event items, these prices incrementally increase before returning to their full price.
How Much Does it Cost to Unlock All Event Items Without Getting Lucky from Event Packs?
Many users claim that this is a predatory practice intended to pressure players into spending money on the full-priced event packs to complete the reward track, after the discounted prices draw them in and allow them to progress through the first couple of milestones. These changing prices aren’t explained in the event tab or in Apex Legends‘ press release covering the event. Additionally, Apex Legends‘ Final Fantasy event increased the regular price of event packs to 1,000 Apex Coins (about $10) from the previous price of 700 Apex Coins.
Although Apex Legends is regarded as one of the best multiplayer games out there, this newest development has fans understandably frustrated and worried about the title’s future. It’s caused significant outcry from the game’s fan base, so it’s not clear whether Apex Legends will continue with this approach in future events. However, fans still have reason to be excited for the game’s future, with the new District map rumored to release in 2024.
