It’s nearly time to return to the post-apocalyptic world of butchers, madmen, and mushroom zombies as we approach The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered release date. There are very few games, let alone PlayStation exclusives, that are anywhere near as divisive as The Last of Us Part 2. Some think it’s a masterpiece, some think it’s torrid, and then there are many who either love the gameplay and hate the story or love the story and hate the gameplay. If you’ve never played the sequel before – or maybe only got into the series following the TV adaptation – it’s time to see what’s next in store for Joel and Ellie.
Naughty Dog officially announced The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered following a number of leaks. If you recall, the launch of TLOU2 was heavily spoiled by leaks, too. Lots of people went into the game furious, thanks to leaked footage and screenshots revealing the fate of a fan-favorite protagonist. Many people also went into the game with assumptions about another character that turned out to be false. While the game’s reception from fans was divisive, to say the least, the critical reception was sublime and it had ten nominations at The Game Awards 2020.
A remaster may sound a little superfluous on paper, as the original game only launched relatively recently – June 2020, to be exact. However, to attempt to make this a more attractive proposition than just a straight port, the PS5 upgrade will also offer lots of new content and it’s something for TLOU fans to be excited about.
The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered PS5 release date
The release date for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on the PS5 is January 19th, 2024. Naughty Dog and PlayStation confirmed its launch on the official PlayStation Blog post. Looking at the release schedule for games in 2024, this opening day means TLOU2 comes out just one week before Tekken 8 and Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth on January 26th.
Although the original game is on PS4, this remaster is exclusive to PS5. It again tells the sequel to Part 1, and the leading playable characters are Ellie and Abby. In addition to this retelling coming out soon, we also know that we are getting season 2 of HBO’s television adaptation. Fans speculate it to arrive in 2025.
How to upgrade to The Last of Us 2 Remastered PS5
To upgrade your digital PS4 edition of The Last of Us 2 to the Remastered PS5 version, you will need to pay a fee of $10 via the PlayStation Store. You’ll be able to purchase the upgrade on the release date mentioned above. Alternatively, if you have a physical copy of the game, you will need to own a PS5 with a disc drive to avail of the upgrade. After you purchase the remaster, you will then need to insert your The Last of Us 2 PS4 disc into your console each time you want to play the sequel.
How and where to pre-order TLOU2 Remastered
You can pre-order The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered starting December 5th through official retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, and the PlayStation Store. There will be a standard digital version available, and there will also be a physical W.L.F. edition you can purchase exclusively from PlayStation Direct.
The W.L.F. edition will include the following content:
- Steelbook display case
- Four enamel pins
- One W.L.F. patch
- 47 Society of Champions trading cards
Unfortunately, the exclusive W.L.F edition is out of stock at the time of writing, as demand for it was unsurprisingly high following its release. It’s currently unclear whether PlayStation and Naughty Dog plan on releasing more in the future. However, we will keep an eye on any developments and update this page with more information once the developers have confirmed it.
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered PS5 price
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is priced at $49.99. It also comes with a $10 upgrade price for players who own the PS4 version. So, if you own a digital copy of the previous-gen game, all you will have to do is pay $10 to upgrade to the new PS5 version. This has been done with several other games in the recent past, such as the Death Stranding Director’s Cut.
Conversely, if you don’t own the game yet, you will need to purchase The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered Standard Edition for $49.99 or your regional equivalent. You can also get the exclusive W.L.F. Collector’s Edition instead for $99.99, though it’s sold out as of writing.
TLOU2 new mode and upgraded content
Arguably the most exciting aspect of the upcoming remaster is the addition of a new mode called No Return. This is a roguelike survival mode where you get to play different characters from the game’s story and setting. Each character comes with its own attributes and playstyles, and each playthrough will offer unique scenarios thanks to random enemy encounters.
In addition to this new mode, Naughty Dog is also adding more flexibility to the guitar. Through a new Guitar Free Play mode, you will be able to play an assortment of new unlockable instruments, as well as again play as several different characters. Finally, there will also be playable sequences of previously cut levels from the game. Rather than fully finished and refurbished levels, these are cut sequences that will be accompanied by commentary from the development team to provide a glimpse into the creative process.
