Oda Reveals The Secret Behind Bonney’s Distorted Future

Jewelry Bonney is at the forefront of things in One Piece’s Egghead Island arc and fans are delighted to see her receive this much attention. The recent Kuma flashback delved into her past and fans got to see everything, starting with her birth, all the way up to her leaving on her journey to becoming a pirate and then, eventually, ending up on Egghead Island. Jewelry Bonney is a fascinating character and along with having very strong character writing, she also has tremendous powers up her sleeve.

Up until now, fans assumed Bonney’s powers to have stemmed from her eating a Devil Fruit. However, One Piece chapter 1103 confirms that Bonney, in fact, did not eat a Devil Fruit but was experimented upon.

How Bonney Got The Power Of Toshi Toshi no Mi

Jewelry Bonney was previously believed to be the owner of the Toshi Toshi no Mi. While this is true in a sense, Bonney actually did not eat a devil fruit. In fact, when Bonney suddenly manifested the power of this fruit, she was not shown eating any Devil Fruit. People around her simply assumed that she ended up eating this Devil Fruit and Bonney herself did not confirm or deny this claim either. In One Piece chapter 1103, it was confirmed to the fans that Bonney, in fact, never consumed any Devil Fruit. Instead, she was experimented upon by none other than Saturn.

Saturn is known to be a scientist and he was responsible for giving sapphire scale to Ginny as well. When his experimentation failed, Saturn discarded her and that was when she died and how Bonney ended up reaching the Sorbet Kingdom. When it comes to Saturn’s experimentation on Bonney, it appears that he was trying to inject the powers of a Devil Fruit into an infant without them trying to eat the fruit itself. This ended up being a success, however, the fruit was rendered useless after. In the case of Bonney, it appears that she ended up receiving the powers of the Toshi Toshi no Mi and this fruit’s primary ability is that it allows the user to take any form that they can think of, as long as they believe in it. The weaker the user’s conviction is, the harder it is to transform into that particular future. However, if the user’s belief is strong, then they can transform into that particular future with rather ease.

What is Distorted Future?

Distorted Future is one of the strongest abilities that fans have seen in One Piece. This power has been utilized by Bonney on many occasions in the story already. The first time fans got to see Distorted Future being used was when Bonney attacked Vegapunk by taking the form of a Buccaneer. Fans know that Bonney is not a Buccaneer, yet, she could take the form of one with rather ease. Later on in the arc, when Oda was exploring the flashback of Jewelry Bonney, fans saw that she could take the appearance of Nika as well. Using the power of Distorted Future, Bonney could take a Nika-ish form and then defeat alpha of the CP8. At this point, it was quite clear to the fans what Distorted Future did.

However, for those who don’t understand it, Distorted Future is simply a technique using which Bonney can take up any future that she can think of. The possibilities with this transformation are limitless. Any future that Bonney can think of for herself is one that she can tap into, provided that she believes in it. As such, the only limitation of the transformation is a lack of imagination and faith in that particular transformation. For instance, Bonney fully believed in the powers of Nika when her dad told her about this legend, and because of that, she was able to manifest the power of Nika. Bonney also knows that Buccaneers exist, since her dad is one and, as a result, she was able to manifest the powers of a Buccaneer.

If, for instance, Bonney sees a Lunarian and wants to transform into one, she can very well do that as well. Any race that Bonney knows exists is one that she can take the form of and this ability is likely not tied down to races either. Bonney can take the form of anything as long as she can put her mind to it and that is what makes this Devil Fruit truly terrifying. As seen in One Piece chapter 1103, if Bonney is made to believe something is a lie, and her belief in that particular thing lessens, then she will have a hard time transforming into the said future.

This was seen when Saturn tried lying to Bonney and told her that Nika doesn’t exist and that her father told her a lie. Bonney certainly did believe in Nika at first, however, as her faith and Nika lessened she could not take on the form of the legendary warrior. Other than that, Bonney is most likely affected by standard Devil Fruit weaknesses.

The Potential Of Distorted Future

As explained already, the potential that Distorted Future carries is immense. This Devil Fruit could end up being one of the strongest in One Piece, provided Bonney uses it correctly. It explains how Bonney is just 12 and has a bounty of 320 million berries on her head. By the time she matures as a pirate, Bonney will likely have a bounty in the billions and it will certainly be worth it. Bonney can already transform into some powerful entities, such as a Buccaneer and even Nika. However, she has not yet made the connection between the real Nika and Luffy. Once Bonney sees Luffy and his white hair transformation and realizes that the person in front of her is Nika, it is highly likely that she will be able to manifest a white head from herself and reach the full potential of the Nika transformation.

This will give Bonney the same abilities as Luffy, however, what she can do with the power of freedom would be highly dependent on how her imagination can go. By all means, Bonney is incredibly likely to reach high levels as a fighter in One Piece.

On Egghead Island alone, Bonney right now is helpless and being saved by Kuma, however, later on in the arc, fans should fully expect her to fight. This is especially going to be the case when Bonney sees Luffy transform into Gear 5. It is possible that Bonney and Luffy will team up together and launch powerful attacks on Saturn. It will essentially be like two Nika’s fighting Saturn and that just goes to show how strong Bonney’s Devil Fruit potential truly is.

As mentioned earlier, Bonney can also take the form of any other race that fans have seen in One Piece, and at the same time, she can also take the form of any other mythical deity to exist in the One Piece world, along with any other mythical creature that she knows is real as well. All things taken into consideration, Bonney’s Toshi Toshi no Mi might just be one of the strongest Devil Fruits to have ever existed.
