James Gunn, the director of the upcoming Superman: Legacy and the co-architect behind the new slate of live-action DC films that will spawn from it, recently hinted that more Arkhamverse video games could happen after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Gunn is no stranger to gaming, having helped write the script for 2012’s Lollipop Chainsaw while also voicing his approval for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy when it launched in 2021.

It was through the MCU versions of the Guardians that James Gunn achieved major superhero fame, but he has since made the jump to DC following the release of The Suicide Squad in 2021. About a year later, he was named co-head of the newly formed DC Studios, and he has said that his new cinematic DC universe will include video games in addition to the expected films and TV shows. Meanwhile, Peacemaker is set to be added to Mortal Kombat 1 as a guest fighter, and this version will be strongly influenced by the live-action incarnation that was introduced in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and the connected Peacemaker series.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s Offline Story Option Will Always Be Too Little Too Late

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will add an offline story mode post-release, but this won’t be enough to combat critiques.

James Gunn has also shared his affection for Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham games in the past, and a Threads user recently asked him about the future of the series after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League launches next February. In a now-deleted reply, Gunn stated that as far as he knows, there are no plans for Suicide Squad to be the final DC game in Rocksteady’s gaming continuity. Gunn also expressed his excitement for Suicide Squad along with any other games Rocksteady develops in the future.

While 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight was initially billed as the finale for Rocksteady’s Arkhamverse, the developer would later announce a spin-off in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. In this new game, players will take control of a quartet of villains tasked with eliminating the brainwashed heroes of Earth – including a returning Arkhamverse Batman voiced by the late Kevin Conroy in his final performance. There have been rumors of Rocksteady possibly rebooting the Arkhamverse at the end of Suicide Squad, but nothing official has been confirmed as of this writing.

Likewise, James Gunn’s recent statements about the future of the Arkham gaming continuity aren’t an absolute confirmation that more sequels and spin-offs are coming, so fans should be advised to take them with a grain of salt for the moment. Some players are already speculating about which heroes these hypothetical games could be focused on though, with Superman being a popular contender given his impending return to the silver screen under James Gunn’s direction. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the continuation of the Arkhamverse when Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League launches on February 2.
