Google has extended the deadline to activate Bluetooth functionality on the Stadia Controller. The original deadline was December 2023, but users now have until December 31st, 2024, to switch their controller into Bluetooth mode.
According to the official website, switching to Bluetooth mode involves downloading a software update, permanently severing ties with Stadia’s Wi-Fi functionality but opening the door to a broader range of gaming possibilities. This does not disable the wired capability of the controller. However, once you activate Bluetooth, there’s no going back to Wi-Fi on Stadia.
While the change is permanent, the process is straightforward. Go to the Google Stadia Controller’s mode selection page and follow the prompts. Pairing your controller in Bluetooth mode is a breeze. Press and hold the “Y + Stadia” buttons for two seconds to enter pairing mode, then connect to your chosen device through its settings. Once paired, you’re all done.
Compatibility varies depending on your device, so check the list of supported devices on the Stadia website. You can remap the Assistant and Capture buttons using compatible button mapping services to suit your needs. The controller utilizes Bluetooth low-energy connections, meaning features like pass-through audio won’t be available wirelessly.
The only other main issue with pairing is the headphone restriction. The 3.5mm and USB ports won’t function for headphones in Bluetooth mode. In this case, you must plug your headphones directly into the controller’s 3.5mm jack when playing wired with USB.
Google wouldn’t extend the date unless a significant amount of people have yet to switch to BlueTooth. Losing Wi-Fi compatibility is a big deal, so I can see why so many people are against doing it. If I had a Stadia, I wouldn’t do it either. Those controllers were expensive, and turning it into just another Bluetooth controller would feel like a downgrade.
