Today Vanillaware and Atlus revealed plenty more details, artwork, and screenshots of the upcoming tactics JRPG Unicorn Overlord.
First of all, we take a look at four new characters who will join us in our fight. We start with Drakenhold crown prince Gilbert who is amassing a force to restore his kingdom after his father has been slain in battle. Next is Virginia, a survivor of the Cronian royal family who fled to Drakenhold when her kingdom fell.
Berengaria is the former and feared leader of the Tricorn Mercenaries, who were a powerful force before she suddenly disbanded them and disappeared. Aramis is a musk… ahem… a mercenary from Drakenhold working for the Zenoira army. He’s skilled with the blade and his manners are quite elegant.
We also take a look at the social activities in which you can engage in Unicorn Overlord. The degree of affinity between characters is indicated by a stat called “Rapport” which will increase as they spend time together and trigger special conversations for specific character pairings.
Fighting within the same unit increases Rapport, and forming a unit with characters who have a high Rapport will grant a Rapport bonus.
Another yummy way to build Rapport is to share meals at taverns that can be found in larger walled cities. You can select the courses included in the meal and this will influence the number of participants and the amount of Rapport gained.
You can also build Rapport between the protagonist Alain and the characters assigned to guard towns by giving them gifts. Picking the gift according to what the recipient likes and avoiding what they dislike will increase its effect.
Last but not least, the hero can perform the Rite of the Covenant with one (and only one) of his companion characters with whom he has maxed his Rapport by giving them the Ring of the Maiden (which matches Alain’s own Ring of the Unicorn) and performing the Rite of the Covenant.
As a result, they will perform the Rite of the Covenant and pledge fealty to each other forever. And yes, if you’re wondering, gender doesn’t appear to matter, as you can see above.
You can check out all of the screenshots below.
Unicorn Overlord was announced during the Nintendo Direct in September, but it’s multiplatform and will be released for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on March 8, 2024.
If you’d like to see more, you can enjoy another gallery of screenshots and details on top of a second showing more characters and providing more information.
Incidentally, we recently learned that Vanillaware’s previous game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, passed 1 million units sold worldwide, which is definitely great news.
