Insomniac Games, the studio responsible for creating the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man series, has reportedly been hit by Rhysida, a hacker group threatening to leak details on the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine project unless a ransom of $2 million is paid within seven days. In addition to revealing information on the Weapon X-led entry, Rhysida will also allegedly disclose character art revolving around other Marvel characters in the game if their demands aren’t met.
According to a report from CyberDaily, the ransomware group’s proof-of-hack data also apparently includes sensitive information on several Insomniac Games employees. This reportedly contains various passport scans, internal emails, signed confidential files, and a personal document belonging to beloved Peter Parker voice actor Yuri Lowenthal. Though Rhysida is already demanding a hefty sum from the studio, they are also allegedly auctioning it off with a starting price of 50 BTC (approx. $2 million).
Based on a separate report from IGN, Sony has now officially acknowledged the threats, stating: “We are aware of reports that Insomniac Games has been the victim of a cyber security attack. We are currently investigating this situation. We have no reason to believe that any other SIE or Sony divisions have been impacted.” Neither Sony nor Insomniac Games have confirmed the legitimacy of these attacks or the threat of leaked sensitive information as of writing.
Though Insomniac’s critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released this past October, the vaunted studio has remained tight-lipped on its next foray into the sprawling Marvel universe. However, information previously provided by Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb has revealed that the upcoming Wolverine project could be released “as early as Fall 2024“, so it may only be a matter of time until more details are announced.
