Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration Brings 15th Doctor to Magic: The Gathering

Even more Doctor Who is coming to Magic: The Gathering. The world’s most popular card game has already hosted the beloved British sci-fi series with Doctor Who Commander Decks, now with Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration brings the most recent adventures to the table.

The Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration announcement

According to the official store page, the Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration drop contains five cards. Those five cards feature brand new characters from the recent Doctor Who 60th Anniversary specials: The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle respectively.

Funny thing about eternity, you keep seeing new sights.

Those five cards feature two new supporting characters. Rose Noble is a Legendary Blue creature that lets you draw cards if you cast a Doctor spell, while The Meep is a Black creature that lets you sacrifice a creature to boost your other creatures by the sacrificed creature’s mana value.

There is one villain featured in the Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration drop, but he’s memorable. The Celestial Toymaker, played in the special by Neil Patrick Harris, is represented as a White/Black/Blue creature.

As for this creature’s effects, it’s an intriguing mix of card draw and damage. Every time you attack, you look at the top three cards of your library and then sort them into two piles. One is face up; the other is face-down. The defender picks one that goes into your hand.

Every time this kind of effect happens, your opponents lose 2 life. Fans of Death of a Thousand Cuts, start drafting now.

Finally, the last two cards feature the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors. The Fourteenth Doctor, played by fan-favorite David Tennant, works best with other Doctor cards. When he’s summoned, you reveal the top fourteen cards of your deck and send any Doctor cards to the graveyard.

The payoff is you can have The Fourteenth Doctor enter the battlefield as any Doctor card sent to the graveyard this way. And it gains haste until the end of the turn.

As for The Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, his card relies more on artifacts. Whenever he enters the battlefield or attacks, you mill three cards and add any 2 or 3 cost artifact cards to your hand.

In addition, the first non-artifact card you play each turn has Improvise, each artifact you tap after activating mana abilities provides one mana to that card’s casting.

All five cards in the Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration drop are available for pre-order right now. They are available in both non-foil (MSRP $39.99) and foil (MSRP $49.99).  The drop is set to release on April 2, 2024.
