Following the reveal of Fortnite Festival that happened last weekend, Epic Games revealed the first gameplay featuring cover artist The Weeknd.
And yes. If you’re wondering, I did that on purpose. I am not sorry. Jokes aside, the reveal came with a trailer of the experience, or game-within-a-game, if you will.
We get to see the in-game version of Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd as he jams on stage wearing different costumes.
The gameplay is very reminiscent of of music game classics like Rock Band, which shouldn’t surprise anyone considering that Fortnite Festival is developed by Harmonix, which basically pioneered the genre and created incredibly successful games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band itself during the heyday of the genre.
Harmonix was acquired by Epic Games in 2021 expressly to create musical content for Fortnite, and this is the result of that acquisition.
You can check out the trailer for yourself while we wait for the release of the experience, which will happen on December 9.
Fortnite Festival has been announced alongside two more experiences that will appear in Fortnite more or less at the same time, likely greatly furthering Epic Games’ metaverse-building plans.
LEGO Fortnite is a crafting survival game that’s basically the game’s version of Minecraft, while Rocket Racing is Rocket League without the soccer gimmick. You have cars and you race.
All three experiences were announced during the Big Bang Live event this weekend, which introduced the new Chapter 5 Season 1 and basically brought the game’s servers to their knees.
Fortnite is a free-to-play battle royale game available one way or another on pretty much every platform that can run games. Incidentally, it broke two major player count records last month, thanks to the OG Season that brought back its original map and features. Epic Games plans to re-implement it at some point next year.
