Diablo fans have been eating well. Blizzard Entertainment’s dark fantasy dungeon crawler RPG has received major commercial success with Diablo IV as well as the well-received remaster, Diablo II: Resurrected. Now, this infernal setting will enter gaming tables, courtesy of a Diablo board game.
The Diablo board game announcement
Ahead of Blizzcon 2023, Blizzard announced both their Diablo board game and TTRPG. According to them, both games will attempt to bring the lore-rich world of Diablo and its satisfying action RPG combat to the tabletop format.
The Diablo board game will be developed by Glass Cannon Unplugged. This studio does have a solid history of adapting video games to the tabletop. Their work includes adaptations of Dying Light, Frostpunk, and the upcoming Apex Legends board game.
In addition, Glass Cannon Unplugged will develop an official Diablo TTRPG. This adaptation won’t use any familiar RPG systems like D&D 5e, Cypher, or Year Zero, but a completely unique system.
Thankfully, Glass Cannon’s newest talent has experience in the TTRPG space. Recently hired line producer and managing editor, Joe LeFavi, formerly of Genuine Entertainment, has experience working on the Alien, Blade Runner, and Dune TTRPGs.
Overall, the Diablo board game and TTRPGs will contain what fans of the franchise expect. Explore dark and forgotten tombs, sewers, or the depths of Hell itself. Forge your own path in the eternal struggles between the forces of Light and Darkness. And craft your own stories in the world of Sanctuary.
Both of these tabletop games have been developed with input from the Diablo creative team. These games will let players continue the lore and story from the dark fantasy horror series.
The Diablo TTRPG game will officially be released at Blizzcon 2024, with extensive playtesting and opportunities for player feedback over the next 12 months. At time of writing, there is no concrete release date for the Diablo Board Game.
