Sega just announced that its mobile game 404 Game Re:Set (also known as Error Game Reset), born from the mind of NieR: Automata creator Yoko Taro, is shutting down soon.
According to the post on the official site, the game will close its live services on January 5, 2024. That’s less than 8 months after its release in Japan on April 25, 2023. It never made it to the west.
The game’s producer mentions that the developers have struggled as much as they could to find ways to keep the game running, but unfortunately, they haven’t been able to gather enough excitement for the game and couldn’t avoid its closure.
The game’s story will end with chapter 10. Chapter 9 will launch on December 13 and Chapter 10 will release the day the game closes, on January 5. Players will be able to download the data in advance and play the last chapter offline.
Interestingly, the developers are now creating a version that can work offline to let player enjoy the story and the characters they have unlocked as long as they want, but it won’t support battle gameplay. Still, it’s a pretty neat way to close the life of a game and more developers of this kind of title should probably learn from it.
The idea of the game was certainly very Yoko Taro-like. The players fight in a dystopian world governed by Sega aided by beloved retro games in waifu form.
Despite the unfortunate closure of the game, events are continuing for a while, and the next update coming on October 30 will see a ninja-themed crossover between Sega’s own Shinobi and Taito’s Legend of Kage. More events will follow.
