Apple once again created a walled garden when it debuted its homemade M1 chip in Macs back in 2020. While the chip and its successor, the M2, have proven very capable at gaming, their bespoke ARM nature has resulted in, quite frankly, far fewer games arriving on the platform.
Several games did get native ports and perform incredibly well, like World of Warcraft, Disco Elysium, and Baldur’s Gate 3. But, a large number of games originally ported to Intel-based Macs ceased working entirely, or saw poorer performance.
M1 Isn’t The One
Ultimately, it wasn’t quite the revolution for Mac gaming that many of us hoped it would be. We got super capable chips, yes, but if there are barely any games to play on them, who really cares?
Fortunately, Apple hasn’t given up, and has courted the likes of Capcom to continue porting its games onto Mac and the iPhone 15 Pro. Resident Evil Village is already available on Mac, and Resident Evil 4 Remake is on its way. Both will also arrive on the iPhone 15 Pro imminently.
That’s without mentioning AAA games from other developers, like Death Stranding, Lies of P, and Metro Exodus either already available or on the way. It’s all great news, but still slow going.
Is M3 The One?
But, that could be about to change. Apple has unveiled an October livestream event that kicks off on Monday, focusing on Macs. The rumour is that the highly-anticipated M3 chip will finally get a reveal in a bevvy of new Macs during this livestream, and the boost for gamers could be huge.
More excitingly though, is a rumour that Apple might be partnering with a Japanese games publisher to show off some huge news during the event. This is the first Apple event not to take place at 10am PDT in perhaps forever, with Apple opting instead for a 5PM slot.
That’s 9am in Japan, for those unaware. That 10am slot would have been 2am in Japan, which isn’t super friendly to any developers or publishers that might appear in the stream.
Who Could Join Apple Onstage?
So, who could it be? Well, Capcom is the most likely candidate given how wholeheartedly it has supported Mac since the inception of M1. October 30 is also the day before Halloween, so could we see a huge Resident Evil game drop, or perhaps the entire series, immediately?
Aside from Capcom, it could feasibly be any publisher. Kojima is a possibility, given that Death Stranding is already on the way. Ultimately, we won’t find out until the event kicks off but I, for one, cannot wait.
