To successfully pull off your heists in Payday 3 without causing any unnecessary casualties, you’ll of course need to watch out for civilians. You can opt to simply stay careful with your shots and avoid accidentally firing at a civilian, but in the middle of a hectic situation, accidents do happen. Fortunately, Payday 3 does grant you some control over the behavior and positioning of civilians thanks to the shout command. However, actually performing the shout might not come as intuitively as you may have expected. This guide will cover this shout command and how the game expects you to activate it.

Performing a shout in Payday 3
Payday 3 maps the shout command to the same button you normally press to ping locations and open up the communication wheel. If you’re playing with a keyboard and mouse, then you hit the middle mouse button. On the other hand, if you have a controller instead, simply press up on your d-pad. Of course, you can remap this command to a different button if you prefer.
However, from what I’ve seen, you can’t just immediately press the assigned button and have the civilians immediately respond to you. First, you have to make sure to alert the civilians to your presence. If you don’t do this and remain in stealth mode, pressing the button will trigger the default ping command instead. It seems that simply aiming your gun at civilians serves as the most straightforward method for catching their attention, allowing you to easily follow that up with a shout command.
Upon successfully using the shout command in Payday 3, an entire group of civilians will get down to the ground. It appears that for this third installment, the developers removed the risk of civilians getting back up and fleeing after you shouted at them. This should render the process of lining all the pieces of your plan together to perform a heist significantly easier.
