The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is planning widespread restrictions on abortion. A draft election plan shows that in future abortions will only be allowed if there are criminological or medical indications. According to Stern and n-tv, which have the document.
The Alternative for Germany also wants mandatory counseling for pregnant women to be made stricter. Expectant mothers should see an ultrasound image of their child during a pregnancy conflict consultation. According to the party, this should ensure they are aware of the stages of fetal development.
Right-wing parties intend to create a “child-welcoming culture”. “When interests are carefully weighed, abortion must remain an absolute exception,” the draft states. The authors cite the right to life, known as a “fundamental human right,” as the basis for the request.
The Alternative for Germany criticized the fact that the right to life of unborn children was not fully protected and that pregnant women were not fully informed about the consequences of abortion and possible support. According to the party, only around 3,000 abortions have been carried out on the basis of criminological or medical indications – which will still be allowed under the new AfD plan. If they find a majority, tens of thousands of abortions each year will no longer be possible in the future.
Abortion remains banned
The number of abortions reached its highest level since 2012, at around 106,000, with 96% of abortions reported in 2023 taking place under so-called counseling regulations, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Four percent of cases were terminated due to medical reasons and sexual offences.
Until now, abortion was prohibited in Germany under Section 218 of the Criminal Code. However, after undergoing mandatory counseling, he remained unpunished until the twelfth week of pregnancy.
A group of MPs want to change that: With the help of a bill introduced in the Bundestag two weeks ago, abortion should be explicitly decriminalized. The new regulations should no longer be based on criminal law but on the Pregnancy Conflicts Act. Health insurance companies should also cover the cost of future abortions. However, there are doubts whether the issue will be discussed before the federal election.
