European research project OpenGPT-X hopes to challenge ChatGPT and Co. with a data protection-friendly language model.
GPT-4, Claude, Grok, Llama and Gemini: the most important AI language models are all from the United States. The OpenGPT-X project now aims to build European artificial intelligence infrastructure.
what happened?
The European research project OpenGPT-X has released a large-scale language model for artificial intelligence applications. Model and name «Teuken-7B» It is now available for download on the “Hugian” platform.
OpenGPT-X is a European research and development project launched in early 2022. The goal of the project is to develop a large-scale artificial intelligence language model that meets European values, data protection standards and language diversity requirements. “Teuken-7B” was trained from scratch in the EU's 24 official languages and contains 7 billion parameters.
Why is this important?
US dominates AI language models
To date, almost all relevant artificial intelligence language models in the Western world have come from the United States. These include OpenAI's GPT-4, AI startup Anthropic's Claude, Elon Musk's xAI's Grok, as well as Facebook group Meta's Llama and Google's Gemini.
According to expert estimates, OpenAI's GPT variant GPT-4o alone has about 200 billion parameters.
The European model “Teuken-7B” should now be made freely available worldwide, thus providing an alternative to science and companies based on public research.
Research and corporate participants can also use the open source model in commercial projects and use the code in their own AI applications.
European linguistic diversity
The OpenGPT-X project is led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) and the Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Germany. The TU Dresden, Research Center Jülich and companies such as Aleph Alpha and IONOS SE are also involved.
Stefan Wrobel, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for IAIS:
“Our model has demonstrated its performance in multiple languages, and we hope that as many people as possible will be able to adapt or further develop the model for their own work and applications.”
The aim is to contribute within the scientific community and together with companies from different industries to meet the growing demand for transparent and personalized generative AI solutions.
