China mourns Zhuhai car accident victims

Chinese people are saddened and angry over the incident in which 35 people were killed by a driver in the southern metropolis of Zhuhai. The day after news of the crime was announced, social networks were flooded with skeptical comments and calls for severe punishment for the 62-year-old driver. In Zhuhai, people laid flowers at the sports center where the directional collision occurred.

“He deserves it,” one user wrote on the social network Weibo. “What prompted him to commit such an inhumane act?” asked another. Many compared the man's actions to terrorism. According to a recent report from the security department, a preliminary investigation showed that the crime that injured 43 people had a personal background.

Criticism of censorship and authorities

The driver expressed dissatisfaction with the division of assets after the divorce. He deliberately drove a small off-road vehicle through the gate of the city sports center and hit the personnel training there. When the man ran away, he was immediately caught by the police. He also seriously injured himself with a knife and was unable to be questioned.

Some criticized the authorities' actions. Although the incident took place on Monday night, it took about 24 hours for security services to announce the death. After the crime, some media coverage of the incident and comments on social media were initially suppressed by censors. «A man in Zhuhai killed 35 people in an incident yesterday. I just found out today. ” said one Weibo user angrily.

Repeated attacks recently

Others linked the censorship measures to the current international air show in Zhuhai, where the People's Liberation Army is also displaying its latest aircraft. Presumably, this should not be overshadowed by bad news.

There has been a recent increase in Chinese attacks, with attackers apparently targeting members of the public at random. In October, a man was arrested on suspicion of attacking a child with a knife at a Beijing school. Five people were injured. In September, a knife attack occurred in a supermarket in Shanghai, killing three people and injuring 15 others.

Foreign citizens have also been victims of attacks many times this year. In June, several lecturers at an American university in northeastern China were stabbed by a man in a park. In the same month, attacks also occurred against a Japanese woman and her child in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou. In September, a man attacked a Japanese student on his way to school in Shenzhen, southern China, and fatally wounded him with a knife.
