Tom Homan should deport and secure borders for Trump — that’s him

Donald Trump has decided who will oversee an announced mass deportation of irregular migrants. Tom Homan is a tough guy – and therefore no stranger to it.

The president-elect will meet with potential candidates in government before taking office on January 20. It has been clear since Sunday night who will be in charge of one of Trump's core issues: border security and deporting refugees.

Tom Homan led an immigration agency during Trump's first term. Trump wrote on his online platform, The Truth Society, that as “border czar” he would be in charge of all U.S. borders.

What kind of office is this?

«I am pleased to announce […] Tom Homan will join the Trump Administration to be responsible for our nation’s borders (border czar), including but not limited to the southern border, northern border, all maritime and air security”: This is what Trump said about Homan in a statement The wording of Mann's appointment. In a post on the Truth social networking site on Sunday night, the US president-elect added that Homan would also be responsible for deporting illegal immigrants.

The office has no official name, other than the term “border czar” coined by Trump.

Who is Tom Homan?

Homan served as a police officer and law enforcement officer. The 62-year-old served as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in 2017 and 2018. He served as the voice of immigration law during the first Trump administration as it stepped up enforcement of immigration laws. He has held the position on an interim basis since the Trump administration took office — though he was never confirmed by the Senate. This is because he was originally intended to serve as deputy in this position. Homan resigned in 2018.

Within the Trump administration, hard-liners are among the strongest supporters of the practice of separating children from their parents to prevent illegal entry. Afterwards, it sometimes takes years to reunite the family. Homan and Trump later said the measure was intended to act as a deterrent so families would not try to find their way to the United States.

After leaving government, Homan worked at Fox News and other companies.

What had Homan noticed?

Homan caused a stir during a recent interview. He was asked on the TV show “60 Minutes” whether a mass eviction campaign could be carried out without tearing families apart. Homan's response: “Of course it works. Families can be deported together.” He argued that children born in the United States and therefore U.S. citizens must also leave the country because their parents immigrated illegally.

“I have a message for the millions of illegal immigrants that Joe Biden is allowing into our country in violation of federal law: You better start packing your bags.”

Homan is also said to have accepted an invitation to a white nationalist conference hosted by Nick Fuentes, a Holocaust denier and Hitler admirer who met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in 2022 Dinner with Kanye West.

The former acting ICE director is also a co-author of “Project 2025,” the notorious ultra-conservative plan for Trump's next presidential term, CNN reported. On immigration, the plan proposes mass arrests, detentions and deportations of undocumented immigrants across the country.

Trump has made border security and “the largest deportations in American history” a centerpiece of his campaign. According to the Pew Research Center, it is expected that by 2022, there will be 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States. Some of them have been in this country for decades. They belong to about 6.3 million households, with a total population of more than 22 million, according to the Pew Research Center. (lak/dab/sda/dpa)
