For many American women, Donald Trump's victory was a slap in the face. Now they want to join the 4B movement.
The US election has sparked strong emotions around the world. The results on election night seemed incomprehensible, especially to Democratic women. Many Harris supporters have announced on TikTok that they will remain celibate and join the 4B movement after Donald Trump takes office in January. Here's what you want to know.
The beginning of the 4B movement
The 4B movement originated in South Korea. Sexism is deeply ingrained in this country. Women were expected not to work, to marry young and to have children. If they fail to live up to this expectation, they are viewed as inferior by society.
In 2016, a woman was brutally murdered by a man in a South Korean subway station. Protests ensued. South Korean women blame the country's misogynistic society. Widespread frustration and the global #MeToo movement eventually led to South Korea's so-called 4B movement.
The 4B movement is a radical feminist initiative. The four B's mean: Bihon (refuse to marry heterosexuals), Bichulsan (refuse to have children), Biyeonae (refuse to date men) and Bisekseu (refuse to have sex with men). In 2019, the movement reportedly had 4,000 members, Asia News reported. The exact number is unclear at this time, but The Cult reports that the number of participants is estimated to be between 5,000 and 50,000.

It is this movement that is now spreading to the United States. On TikTok, hundreds of women have posted videos announcing their desire to join the 4B movement. They argue that men were the main force behind decisions that favored Trump in the election. They also addressed issues of sexism and racism in their country and hoped to spark a “silent” protest. The main thing many people talk about is that they will no longer have sex with men.
Others go further, to the point where they are no longer willing to conform to the “male gaze,” male needs, sexualized perceptions of women, and take conscious steps to do so. Some shave their heads or grow armpit hair so that they no longer fit into men’s eyes of the “ideal woman.”
Others want to take a more radical approach and render themselves infertile so that they cannot get pregnant at all. The protest focused on possible restrictions on abortion. Under Trump, abortion after rape could also become a criminal offense.
On TikTok, women offer advice on how to prevent pregnancy. They think you should get your IUD made today and buy the morning-after pill in advance. This would last four years and guarantee contingency planning for the duration of Trump's term.
Dangers of the 4B Movement
While most people in the comments under the TikTok video applauded the women's decision, others also pointed out the dangers of the 4B movement. “Ladies, take note! If men don't get what they want, they get it,” one user said. Another wrote: “Yes let us all join the movement but let us all learn to defend ourselves, people will not accept our decisions.”
Other women noted that such boycotts can also be financially dangerous for women. “If men start boycotting us financially, this boycott won't end well. We don't have enough women in the tech industry,” one user wrote on Reddit. She also argued that hatred of men is not a vote of confidence. Correct response: “We have to focus on providing more training and information to all people. Women voted for Trump, too.”
