Why did Donald Trump win and Kamala Harris lose? A day after the former president defeated his current vice president in a landslide, media outlets in Switzerland and around the world are analyzing the historic election.

Here are the headlines from newspapers around the world the next day:

NZZ

That's the top story in Thursday's NZZ.

“NZZ” writes that Kamala Harris had a difficult start. “As vice president, she will not be able to credibly distance herself from the mistakes of the Biden administration. Your rivals will immediately take advantage of that.” So Democrats must look at the ledger and see why they were able to lose so badly in the election. “The loss of Joe Biden’s election would certainly be devastating.”

Donald Trump, on the other hand, has made a lot of mistakes, but that doesn't matter, NZZ reports. “The same laws don't seem to apply to him like everyone else. He's also following his gut, not his advisers, in this race.” His performance changed after the assassination of Trump in Pennsylvania. It's getting weirder and weirder. Immigrants who eat pets, political opponents who must be persecuted or even executed. “But Trump has nothing to hold on to. More importantly, he has been able to mobilize a group of voters who rarely come out from behind their computers: young people of all stripes.”

“Tages-Anzeiger”

The Daily Review believes that Trump’s victory is a defeat for women. “Americans had a choice between Democrats and demagogues. They chose a candidate with a criminal conviction who ran a sexist campaign who wanted to use armed force against his political opponents and who had a reputation for lying. And—and this is crucial—engaged in an attempted coup against American democracy.

Kamala Harris, on the other hand, had a stellar campaign. Questions about whether she is a suitable opponent to stop Trump's comeback are moot. Still: “Had President Joe Biden recognized months earlier that age was weakening him, regular marches within the Democratic Party would still be possible.”

According to Tages-Anzeiger, the worrying outcome of this election is: Harris will also lose because she is a woman and not white. “Kamala Harris did not make her gender or origin a campaign issue. She preserved her dignity by not falling into this political trap.”

“Blick”

“Being Swiss, you don't have to understand it,” “Blick” ultimately tries to explain the puzzling. Most Americans just want Trump's future to be better than Kamala Harris's.

Blick concludes: “As Swiss, we may not understand Trump’s election, but we can learn from it.” Fortunately, thanks to direct democracy, we are not at the mercy of anyone in this country. Nonetheless, the election also has an impact on Switzerland: “Under Trump, the battle for global markets will become even more intense,” the review predicted. As a small exporting country, Switzerland has long benefited from free trade. With a second Trump term, new tariffs and trade barriers will also challenge our economy. Conclusion: “The situation in Switzerland is becoming increasingly complex.”

“Der Spiegel”

Germany's Der Spiegel commented that Trump's election was a “punch in the face.” Now everything starts from scratch again. Now, you'll keep seeing this face on every cover, in every form: close-up, long shot, caricature, collage, Trump is the devil, Trump is the emperor, Trump is the predator, special Trump, Trump, Trump. “And it could be even worse than last time.” It's frustrating.

This is not beyond doubt. “Let's be honest, all the confidence that Kamala Harris had after entering the US presidential race was just wishful thinking. The people out there would re-elect this madman into the White House, a convicted criminal, an open democracy and an international treaty Enemy, that's not right. Then it may be that hope for low gas prices and tax-free tips is clearly more important than reason and goodwill.

The German weekly Die Zeit also had a clear stance on the U.S. election: Trump’s election victory would be a nightmare not only for American Democratic voters, but also for most Democrats.

“The American people know what they’re going to get if Trump is elected. Despite his ‘spiritual sectarianism’, disdain for women, and demagoguery, the people’s approval is largely due to the economic status of many voters who don’t really feel to the success of Joe Biden’s economic policies.”

The New York Post summed up yesterday's Election Day succinctly: “He's done it again,” the tabloid's front page read.

Next to the caption, a photo of former and future President Trump simply grinned. According to the New York Times, he has “made a comeback over the years.”

Kamala Harris last week called Donald Trump an anomaly who does not represent America. “That's not who we are,” she said. The New York Times retorted: That's true for most Americans. The assumption that Trump was an “anomaly” who would disappear into the “ash heap of history” was washed away on Election Day.

The political establishment can no longer view Trump as a temporary hiatus in the long march of progress, a lucky guy who snuck into the White House eight years ago. With his victory over Harris, Trump can finally reshape America in his own image.

“Washington Post”

Democrats take minority votes for granted

According to the Washington Post, Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party must be held accountable for Trump's ability to score points among minorities. “Democrats took minority votes for granted. It cost her the election.”

Hispanics, blacks and even Puerto Ricans helped Trump win, according to the Washington Post. According to national exit polls, 46% of Latinos, 39% of Asians and 21% of blacks voted for Trump over Harris.

“Vanity Fair”

For American society magazine Vanity Fair, Donald Trump's victory was no coincidence. The former president's victory eight years ago was considered a political anomaly. “But the 2024 race shows that this country is further to the right than we thought.” The cover features a photo of the new president with the following list: 34 felonies, 1 conviction, 2 pending cases, 2 Impeachment proceedings, 6 bankruptcies, 4 years to go.

The Times

The British “Times” believes that the US Democratic Party has overestimated itself. “You can't run a campaign based on the motto 'The country is on the right track.' So they tried 'Better the devil, you know.'” That seemed to prove weaker than the message that change was needed. (…)

Democrats also believe that female voters will rebel against laws restricting abortion and dislike Trump's “macho” behavior. This belief that women support Harris seems misguided. They may be hoping that their dedicated local campaigns – in which volunteers go door-to-door to persuade voters – can play a decisive role. “They may just be overestimating this type of campaign.”

Regarding the US presidential election, the Dutch newspaper “Telegraph” said: “After January 6, 2021, few people will bet even a penny on the political future of Donald Trump. After all, the 45th President of the United States Not only has the president refused to acknowledge his election loss to Joe Biden, he has launched a veritable popular uprising to prevent his Vice President, Mike Pence, from officially declaring the defeat. Did it – American voters re-elected Trump as president (aargauerzeitung.ch).
