The Ukrainian government believes that Russia's use of North Korean soldiers in its war of aggression against Ukraine has been confirmed and called for a tough response from the international community.
North Koreans should fight disguised as Siberians
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umderov talked about the first skirmish with North Korea in an interview with South Korea's KBS TV station. However, they would join the Russian army disguised as Siberian Buryats. Therefore, it is difficult to identify North Koreans. According to US media reports, North Korean troops have been deployed in the Kursk region on the Russian border for the first time.
“The first battle with North Korean soldiers will turn a new page of instability for the world,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an evening video message. He was less specific than his defense secretary about the deployment of North Korean troops on the battlefield. To this end, he made clear requirements:
“We must join the world in doing everything we can to ensure that Russia's move to expand and escalate the war is a step toward failure.”
This applies to Russia and North Korea.
Government and military officials in Ukraine, the United States and South Korea have been warning North Korean soldiers for days that they could be involved in Russia's aggressive war. Up to 15,000 troops from the largely internationally isolated authoritarian country could be deployed to the Kursk region on the Russian border to fight Ukrainian forces.
Report: First conflict in Kursk
The New York Times reported the first clash between North Korean and Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region on the Russian border, citing Ukrainian and U.S. officials. Ukrainian troops advanced into the region during the summer. According to reports, the limited deployment of North Korean soldiers may be to test Ukraine's weaknesses. It's unclear exactly when the fighting took place.
The U.S. official told the New York Times that a large number of North Korean soldiers were killed. Ukraine has cited intelligence services as saying thousands of North Korean soldiers have recently arrived in Kursk.
Belbok: stay with you
German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock concluded a visit to Ukraine on Tuesday and once again assured Zelensky of her support. “When the whole world is watching the United States, there is no better place than to be with you in Ukraine,” the Green party politician said, referring to the simultaneous presidential election in the United States. “We will stay with you. “If Republican Donald Trump wins, Ukraine will have to worry about U.S. support as its most important ally in the war against Russia.
Ukrainian prisoner of war shot to death by Russia again
The Ukrainian prosecutor's office is currently investigating further cases of alleged shooting deaths of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian soldiers. Three Ukrainian soldiers were shot to death after being captured in the Selidov city area of eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region about two weeks ago, according to a statement. Additionally, last week, three disarmed Ukrainian military personnel were killed in the frontline Pokrovsk region, also located in the Donetsk region.
Ukrainian authorities have opened proceedings in dozens of prisoner shootings. The United Nations has also listed such cases in its human rights report, in particular the alleged killing of prisoners of war by Russia.
Ukraine drone defense system interferes with GPS signal
With help from the West, Ukraine has been fending off Russian aggression for two and a half years. Drones are also used on a large scale, as are electronic warfare tools that can be used to manipulate the coordinates of GPS systems based on satellite signals. The Ukrainian General Staff stated that a side effect of this defensive strategy was to destroy the time system of the mobile phone. Navigation systems accessing satellite data may also be disrupted during active air alerts.
According to media reports, GPS signals in the capital Kiev and surrounding areas have been interrupted due to drone attacks. Shown is not the location of Ukraine, but the coordinates of neighboring Belarus and Russia.
Russian combat drones have also repeatedly flown into the airspace of neighboring countries, according to unanimous reports from the Ukrainian military and authorities in Belarus, Romania and Latvia. This is attributed to electronic interference. According to a Ukrainian Air Force report, this tactic has been used since around early summer. Information provided by the warring parties cannot be independently verified. (Sudan Development Authority/Department of Political Affairs/Associated Press)
