One Direction singer Liam Payne dies after falling from window

British singer Liam Payne fell to his death from a third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital. The investigation is ongoing.

According to reports from CNN and other international media in the United States, Liam Payne, a former member and singer of the very successful British boy band One Direction in the 1910s, passed away at the age of 31.

According to local newspaper El Pais and other reports, the British man fell from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires. According to eyewitnesses, Payne fell from a height of about 14 meters into the hotel courtyard. The accident occurred shortly after 5pm local time (10pm Swiss time).

Police confirmed Payne's death. When he fell, he was seriously injured and “out of tune with life.” Alberto Crescenti, head of the rescue operation, explained:

In addition to this, the singer is said to have suffered a fractured skull. An autopsy is still ongoing. The context of the death raises questions. Police said emergency services arrived at the hotel in the Palermo district minutes after receiving an emergency call. The emergency call was about a man who was allegedly acting aggressively and possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the hotel lobby.

Argentinian newspaper Clarin also published photos of Payne's room, which it said showed drug residue and a destroyed television. Both prosecutors and police are investigating the incident.

Payne posted numerous video clips throughout the day and shortly before the fall on the messaging app Snapchat. Among other things, he appeared with his girlfriend, internet celebrity Kate Cassidy, and wrote that he had “a great day in Argentina.” A few days earlier, the couple had attended a concert hosted by Payne's former 1D colleague Niall Horan.

The singer announced in a 2023 video on YouTube that he had a substance abuse problem and spent 100 days in a rehab clinic. As of press time, he said he had been clean for six months.

Liam Payne is best known as a member of the British casting boy band One Direction. In 2011, he finished third in the TV show The X Factor alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. The band then took off internationally with hits such as “You Don't Know You're Beautiful”, “Best Song Ever” and later “Story Of My Life”. After the band took a break in 2016, Payne began a solo career.

Liam Payne leaves behind seven-year-old son Bear, whom he had with singer Cheryl Cole.
