There will be no crisis-proof logistics by 2035

Army Commander Thomas Süssli terminated an IT project to ensure war logistics. Replacement can take years.Image: trapezoid

The army canceled another IT project because the software could not operate independently of foreign countries. This time it’s about logistics. Even if there is a war. A replacement won't be ready for at least a decade.

The army is temporarily unequipped to deal with the crisis: research published by SRF radio on Wednesday shows this. A multimillion-dollar computer project was secretly canceled. This applies at least to the area of so-called “war logistics.”

According to reports, the Army will not be able to ensure that it can independently mobilize soldiers or maintain fighter jets in a timely manner in the event of a crisis until 2035 at the earliest. Or maybe food or ammunition is simply ready in the right place at the expected time.

The Army explained that the SRF's software introduction exercise was partially canceled due to deficiencies in the selected logistics information technology. According to SRF radio, this is not as strong and resilient as initially thought. Additionally, it cannot operate independently of international cloud solutions.

Politicians write worried letters to each other

According to research, Army Chief Thomas Süssli stopped the IT project on June 21, 2023. Now the army wants to find alternatives, according to the Ministry of Defense in charge.

The Army chief told the responsible oversight committee that the deadline would be extended for another decade or so. The Army and Defense Department have not commented on any costs or additional costs.

A new round of IT meltdowns is now also bringing politics into the spotlight. This showed that for the first time political representatives from the left and the right were on the same page. Security politicians have written a letter to the parliamentary finance committee. According to the SRF, they also raised the question of whether delays in the introduction of war logistics would pose security risks to Switzerland. The National Council's Security Policy Committee expects a report by the Federal Council by next summer to clarify this.

With the help of SAP's so-called business resource planning software, the military hopes to be able to carry out its mission under all circumstances. Four years ago, Parliament approved 240 million francs for the corresponding “ERP Systems V/ar” project. (Satellite/Channel Media)
