Academy Award-winning actor Kay Hui Kwan brings John Wick to his first film performance as the lead, according to delighted moviegoers.
Kwan's Love Hurts trailer caused a social media frenzy after X and Reddit users compared the legendary film character to John Wick.
X users called the film the return of Kwan's action star, with one person insisting that he “becomes a fun, cheeky bad guy.”
The Everywhere All At Once star's next film will hit theaters on February 7, 2025.
Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan will star in the upcoming action film.
Social media users have been comparing Kwan to the legendary action movie character John Wick.
Kwan plays successful real estate mogul Marvin Cable, whose dark past comes back to haunt him when his crime lord brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu) is hunted.
The actor spoke to People about his excitement about making his lead debut in 'The Perfect Movie' this week.
“I've always fantasized about being at the top of the scoring chart or putting myself in the place of the leader,” Kwan said.
'I never thought that one day I would be the lead actor in a major studio film. So it's an amazing feeling.”
X users are just as excited as Kwan, many of whom immediately noticed the connection between Love Hurts and the John Wick series.
Social media pointed out the connection between Love Hurts and the first three John Wick films
The series revolves around the life of the legendary hitman John Wick played by Keanu Reeves.
Most of the four John Wick films have action sequences and fight choreography, which fans have called incredible stunt work.
Jonathan Eusebio, one of the fight coordinators on the first three John Wick films, will make his directorial debut with Love Hurts.
Several X users pointed out the link and revealed that it was one of the reasons they were interested in seeing Kwan's new movie.
'Why do I feel like I'm really going to like this? Is Kay Hui Kwan starring in an action movie of his own?' one X user tweeted.
Is the 87th involved in the North? John Wick level action with the fight coordinator in that movie directing it? Sign me up, damn it!!!.'
X and Reddit users also said that Kwan's character was reminiscent of Jackie Chan, citing a scene in the trailer in which the actor was seen removing his glasses.
Kwan plays a successful real estate agent whose dark past comes back to haunt him.
Several X users were happy to see Kwan become a protagonist and insisted on watching the film due to the similarities between him and Chan.
Kwan fans were also curious about some of the film's other stars: Ariana DeBose, Marshawn Lynch and Sean Astin.
One Reddit user hinted that Kwan and Austin will have a “mini Goonies reunion.”
In addition to Chan and Austin, commentators praised Guan's collaborations with Wu and Lynch.
'I love that Daniel Wu and Kay are getting jobs. “I love both of their work, they're both great at fight choreography, so this is going to be amazing,” one Reddit user wrote yesterday.
Another Reddit user wrote: “Looks like Marshawn Quan has a unique opportunity in this case.”
Unfortunately, not all commenters on the post were excited about the trailer, with at least five commenters calling the trailer a “full movie.”
'Give the Make a Wig project. I hope it's good, I think I've already seen the movie,” wrote one movie buff.
