Sean Dyche asks the FA to reassure English coaches after Tuchel's visit | Sean Dyche

Sean Dyche has questioned whether the Football Association is committed to giving English managers a route to the top flight. Thomas Tuchel appointed technical director of the men's team.

The Everton boss did not criticize Tuchel's choice and insisted he was not disappointed, although he said “a common theme from the people I spoke to at the game” was a preference for an English manager. Dyche, one of five English-born managers in the Premier League, was not contacted about the vacancy.

Dyche believes Duchel's arrival casts doubt on the FA's intention to develop English players and coaches at St George's Park, a policy that paid dividends with Gareth Southgate's promotion but now appears to have been abandoned.

“The question I ask is: I know it's not that simple, but is the under-16 coach made of material that can be seen going through the system to become England coach?” Dyche said. “If the FA says they are going to train coaches to become England coaches, are under-16s, 17s, 18s, 19s and 21s the right type of coach? If they don't, I don't see the point of the process. If they are, and they very well could be, I suggest a good way to look at it.

“But how is an English under-16 coach going to overcome that if it's supposed to be specific to that age group? Maybe they're looking in that direction, I don't know, but Lee Carsley isn't supposed to. [suitable by the FA]. So was it always assumed that it didn't exist or could it always exist? We know Carsley may have been very close to it, but I would ask: are coaches at the younger levels already considered the right type to lead our national team? If not, it will be difficult to raise them as gang leaders.”

Former England captain Wayne Rooney, Carsley's Everton teammate, has questioned the FA's approach to men's national work. “I think he is [Tuchel] “He is a good coach, but it is surprising that the FA have hired him,” said the Plymouth manager.

“I've been part of what the FA has built and witnessed what they've built over the last 10 to 15 years, it's great. It's a great platform for young practitioners, so I'm surprised they don't opt for one of their own. But they have already made a decision and I wish them the best. I hope it does us good.
